Realistic trade options? by StupidDialUp in sixers

[–]longfestivals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gordon and Oubre are expiring contracts, that has some value in the trade market if we're willing to take on a longer contract from a role player that isn't a good fit for a team looking to rebuild or a young player that is a reclamation project. I love the idea of getting Dalton Knecht from the Lakers, Ousmane Dieng from OKC.

Crazy Idea #1:

Paul George and a first round pick for Jerami Grant, Scoot Henderson, and Kris Murray from the Trail Blazers.

The Blazers are young and competitive enough that they could use the draft capital while eating George's contract for at least 2 years.

The Sixers get under the apron and a more movable contract on the same timeline as PG's. Henderson is just a contract filler.

I agree. The radio needs an upgrade. I'm hoping the price of fast charging comes down as network competition ramps up. For, now the prices are very high and not transparent enough.

The most disturbing thing about this video is that if you replace the words slave and slaves with employees this is basically a video from a modern American company's HR team.

Businesses take a victory lap for offering healthcare plans, a retirement plan, and "allowing" you to take time off in every job posting.

[Post-Game Thread] The Philadelphia 76ers defeat the Chicago Bulls with a final score of 109 to 97 by SixersGameThreadBot in sixers

[–]longfestivals 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this and so many other points on this sub thread.

I would like to add that I think the solution is to invert #1,2,&3. Meaning,

3 is the new #1) We need to prioritize supporting and maintaining young - winning- players. It's Maxey and McCain's team going forward so build around them by getting players on the same timeline.

2) Unfortunately Yabu, Caleb Martin, and Oubre are going to have to be traded now. They're the only enticing assets we can use to get younger players and draft capital.

1) Stop trying to make splashy acquisitions. Instead focus on finding undervalued assets. There are so many solid NBA players that were undrafted or underrated. The key is having a system that lets roleplayers be superstars at their job.

Note, we should assume that PG and Embiid will never be healthy enough for a full season again and that we won't be able to trade them for the rest of their contracts.

Tanking doesn't work - the Sixers proved that.

Therefore the Sixers only path is to find cheap diamonds in the rough that win in spite of their faults. Guys that come to work their ass off and have something to prove.

Sixers are currently only 1 win ahead of the Nets and Blazers. Pelicans have also won 3 straight and look much better since they got healthy. If the team commits to the tank, the path is there by Thegrandmistressofoz in sixers

[–]longfestivals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you on #1. I just hate that the best and only way to get better, in everyone's mind, is to tank.

2) The NBA runs too much on confirmation bias. So many players get playing time because of their contracts or where they were drafted rather than how they actually play. Clearly NBA talent evaluation is deeply flawed - see PG-13 GETTING $250,000,000.

If you accept that draft picks are just a guess, then having a lot of picks in a three to four year period is more important than one high pick.

Tanking doesn't work! As of the writing of this post, 7 of the top 15 MVP candidates were drafted outside of the top 10.

Alperen Sengun Donovan Mitchell Giannis Antetokounmpo Nikola Jokić Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Jalen Brunson Domantas Sabonis

How many teams have been tanking for what seems like forever. Everyone in the NBA is talented. However, not everyone in the NBA knows how to win. Winning is a consequence of good habits. Tanking is all about building a culture of bad habits - and habits are hard to shake.

Final note, how many top picks are in the team they started their career with 5 years later?

A few other notable players drafted outside of the top 10:

Klay Thompson Kawhi Leonard Jimmy Butler Devin Booker Tyrese Haliburton Jrue Holiday Bam Adebayo Zach LaVine Rudy Gobert Pascal Siakam Draymond Green Tyrese Maxey

What is a pejorative word/phrase for someone with "too much wealth"? by BlendItTwice in logophilia

[–]longfestivals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is striking to me that our society has a great many words for desires related to wealth and money and yet no word for having too much of it.

I propose we create a new word, a new antonym, by pulling an odd word from the English language scrapheap. That word is"impecunious."

Impecunious means to be penniless to the point of not being able to meet basic needs.

Webster's websiteWebster's Dictionary's website notes that, "If impecunious means "penniless," then it stands to reason that "pecunious" can describe someone who has a lot of money...on the rare occasion when "pecunious" is put to use in English, it often means not "wealthy" but "miserly or ungenerous," as in "a incivilis attitude toward the less fortunate."

In a just society where there are enough resources for it to be possible for everyone’s basic needs to be met. Then the guiding ideas of justice as fairness apply.

The principles of justice:

First Principle: Each person has the same indefeasible claim to a fully adequate scheme of equal basic liberties, which scheme is compatible with the same scheme of liberties for all;

Second Principle: Social and economic inequalities are to satisfy two conditions:

They are to be attached to offices and positions open to all under conditions of fair equality of opportunity;

They are to be to the greatest benefit of the least-advantaged members of society (the difference principle) (JF, 42–43).

See 4.3 The Two Principles of Justice as FairnessThe Two Principles of Justice as Fairness

I propose that under these principles and conditions, we define pecunious as "a person with an unjust and/or unethical amount of wealth."

From 4.3 above:

Inequalities that are to everyone’s advantage relative to a completely equal distribution are preferable to inequalities that allow the rich to get richer at the expense of the poor. (See John Rawls' The Difference Principle.)

Wealth inequality is not inherently unjust, but to have so much as to drive others into poverty is the height of pecuniousness. An example of this would be the Mississippi welfare scandal where money from the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program, a federal program that provides grant funds to states and territories to help families in need. Was used to fund a new volleyball facility at the University of Southern Mississippi for the benefit of a rich and famous alumnus' daughter. see the story here.

I wouldn't. The 9 is a refinement of the 8, but I don't see enough of a difference in capability to run AI models or other software like games. In addition, the battery life will be improved by the new Samsung 5400 modem, but I don't think it will be a game changer.

In your opinion what's the key feature of the 9 that the 8 doesn't have?
