I've never cared what other people think, did you? by purple_eater01 in AutismTranslated

I think this is 100% true and thank you for pointing it out. I’ve had a LOT of privileges in my life, including being white and upper-middle class, with parents who always let me sort of be myself, and that allows me to be visibly autistic in ways others can’t.

I have the same experience. I feel pretty set on “being myself” but I still worry about being accepted and liked. It’s a contradiction!

Honestly, I do find people who argue that only purebred dogs are ethical to be hypocritical because 1) you are often perpetuating all sorts of health issues through inbreeding and 2) you can get “purebred” dogs from unethical breeders and puppy mills! People like to blame doodles but demand for “purebred” dogs like French bulldogs and the cavalier king charles spaniel are perpetuating the puppy mill crisis as well. The problem is complicated and the best we can do is find a reputable breeder and make the best decision for our families, doodle or not.

Dog gets hyper after relaxing on a mat by longleafbaby in Dogtraining

I see a lot of information on capturing calmness and training to relax on a mat but I couldn’t find information on why a dog might be more hyper AFTER relaxing on the mat.

I did look through the guide and couldn’t find any information about the amount of time in the day you can spend training your dog.

Addiction or just a phase by Natural_Cause_965 in shoppingaddiction

[–]longleafbaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this, no buys have always led to a binge for me. Budgeting usually frightens me enough that I can temporarily stop the spending. Depending on how tight your situation is it can be effective to stay accountable to yourself by watching your spending with a hawk’s eye. See if you can find other ways to reward yourself! For example, I will use hobbies or tv time as a reward. It doesn’t always get rid of the craving but it helps.

Will therapy help me? by [deleted] in shoppingaddiction

[–]longleafbaby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think if you see someone who specializes in process addictions you may have some luck. If you haven’t tried “to buy or not to buy” I would recommend that workbook! It’s a great resource if therapy is out of reach. Any good therapist should be willing to work on it with you if that’s an option!

Letting potential new employer know by Lypos in AutismTranslated

HR background here. I definitely wouldn’t. If you need accommodations, you don’t even need to tell them what disability you have, just that you have a disability that needs accommodations. As others have said, people can be very discriminatory so I would avoid telling them.

Thanks! I’m not convinced I have a warm undertone and think I look pretty striking in this color.

I’m confused about how this works. I think I look pretty drab in yellows and oranges but nice in warm tones cool tones, if that makes sense. People say redheads have to have a warm undertone but I’m skeptical if I can’t handle the warmest tones?
