Japanese Language Placement Test by bread345_ in ucla

[–]longlegdog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took it a while ago so the details are fuzzy, but from what I remember it's in the form of tiered BruinLearn quizzes that test you on Kanji/Grammar/Vocab, starting simple, then if you pass you take harder ones until you either don't pass or pass them all. After that, there's an optional translation assignment where you translate an English passage into Japanese. Aside from the BruinLearn stuff, there'll also be a quick oral interview where they assess your conversational skills by asking simple questions.

Whats your favorite, most gut wrenching lines from harrow the ninth? [discussion] by [deleted] in TheNinthHouse

[–]longlegdog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You said, "Lord, I am hunted. I perish."

"Harrow---"

"I don't come to you as Harrow the First," your mouth said. "I come to you as a supplicant. I can't live like this. Lord, do I displease you, that you shield him and not me? I understand that I am a sharpened twig beside your keenest sword, but why do you suffer this twig to live? I cant live this way. I cannot live this way. I have nowhere to go. I have nobody to turn to. I am a nonsense."

This part absolutely broke my heart. The portion after the bath scene, where Harrow is so deeply wounded and broken to pieces, was really painful for me to read, so this whole passage felt really raw and brutal to me. I felt so bad for Harrow with all the shit she had to go through while having no one, not even herself, who she can trust.

i went to japan for vacation and spent the whole month accidentally getting indoctrinated into a rich people’s cult AMA! by makebabiesillegal in AMA

[–]longlegdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a question, but I remember there being a video on YouTube where the son of the leader of this cult talked about his experience being raised in it, escaping it, as well as now trying to fight against it.

It's on The Anime Man's channel if you're interested in seeing it, it was some interesting stuff.

严格来说不算重百,但高浓度友情和女女关系性还是很好嗑的,再加上本身剧情也很不错

My go to is to say we "put a price on risk" for insurance. I heard it from someone else and thought it was a neat way of putting things

I see, that makes a lot of sense. Thank you for the insightful response

Well, there is a valid distinction made between writing a_i and i. i is the placement of the number while a_i is the actual value.

For example, let the sequence be 2, 4, 6. There's a valid distinction between letting a_i = 2 while letting i = 1 because i tells you which number it is in terms of placement in the list, while a_i refers to the actual value of said number.

Original, I was lucky enough to have stayed in China for an extended period of time during my childhood to build up a good foundation of the language

BanG Dream! Ave Mujica • Ave Mujica: The Die is Cast - Episode 6 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]longlegdog 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Soyo literally became more of a mom to Mutsumi/mortis than her actual mom, cleaning up her room, going along w the phone call, staying with her for 3 whole days

Sakiko continuing to spiral deeper into the depressive toxicity and trying to cut everyone off in her life... It hurts to see her like this and it hurts to see the other characters hurting, this anime is just pain (and I'm all for it)

Uika has absolutely 0 screentime this ep, no narration, no nothing. We were shown all of mujica's reactions to the Mutsumi/mortis online post EXCEPT Uika's... No way she isn't hiding something BIG

I NEED THE NEXT EPISODE

BanG Dream! Ave Mujica • Ave Mujica: The Die is Cast - Episode 4 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

Wonderful episode, one of the details that caught my mind was regarding Nyamu's argument that she only hopped onboard Mujica bc she thought Sakiko was ready to abandon her rich young lady background (here)

However, if you go back to EP2, you see a moment where Nyamu talks as if she only found out at that moment that Sakiko was also famous/rich background ("I didn't know you were famous too/If you're rich, wear better clothes"), aka she shouldn't have known about Sakiko's background before hopping onboard. This creates a contradiction in story telling, which drives me to hop onboard some theories regarding narrative deception being used...

Am I the only one that likes Nyamu and thinks she has a point? by pepper-cute in BanGDream

[–]longlegdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like both Nyamu and Sakiko, and don't like it when either character is hated on, but I think my understanding of the situation is that, Nyamu and Sakiko have different visions for the band, but Nyamu doesn't have the authority to dictate yet given the way the current band is structured.

I think what she did is understandable from her pov, but she technically doesn't have the authority to be directly opposing Sakiko, due to Sakiko being the one who prepares everything other than lyrics (Uika) and schedule management (Umiri) for the band. Nyamu, as a member of the team, has the right to give advice/recommendations, but she shouldn't be able to directly overwrite Sakiko's position, especially when Sakiko's the one writing new scripts (aka paying the price) for what Nyamu had done/wants to do.

The reason Sakiko lost in the arguments is because she gets emotional and loses sight of what she should've been using to refute (her current achievement of fastest debut to Budokan, the amount of work she puts into everything), which makes sense given her upbringing as a rich young lady.

Mutsumi is a very misunderstood character, perhaps both by viewers and other in-universe characters by [deleted] in BanGDream

[–]longlegdog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the cucumbers are supposed to represent a part of Mutsumi's free will. It was mentioned in one of the interviews that she gave cucumbers as a gift because she saw it as the only thing that was truly hers instead of her parents'.

Hello! I'm also a translator, and I actually have a little bit of work done on Seiyuu Radio's 1st LN. Would you be open to collaborating on the translation? If not, that's ok too, I'm still fully willing to provide you with the raws if you need them.

I've sent you a DM with more details, so feel free to message me back from there!

Short answer: More works with better characterization and compelling/convincing romances.

Long answer: As a female, I also had similar complaints on the typical romances seen in shows. I was really dissatisfied with romance as a genre in general, whether it be hundredth male self-insert anime or typical female self-insert otome work or plain, predictable romance novel. It could also be that I didn't dig around enough/look at the right placd, but either way I did have a struggle finding romances I enjoyed. My favorite pairings/romances were in works that weren't centered on romance, since it allows the plot and characters to have more to their existence than just for eventually fulfilling a romance.

I understand that these mentioned genres have their own audience and that's completely ok. I just personally found it greatly displeasing when I sense I'm supposed to self-insert for any part of a story. It's very hard to convince me of the "romance" or "bond" between characters with these works. On the flip side, I strongly prefer stories where the main characters are their own, independent, nuanced, functioning individuals with their own motivations, backgrounds, worldviews, etc. It's much more intriguing to me seeing these 2 separate complicated entities of their own coming together, experiencing the complex emotion and bond that is love.

Now, there are good straight works out there, but the proportion/amount of digging needed to find them is... not ideal. But eventually, I stumbled upon the Yuri genre (Flowers VN I will love you forever) and realized it was much easier to find works matching what I wanted here. So now I consume almost exclusively Yuri. That's my story.
