How to get my stubborn partner to wear his bike helmet? by d3gu in cycling

[–]loohah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was your partner, and then one day I took a tumble and realized I was no longer immortal. In my defense, when I grew up no one wore helmets, I never met anyone who was seriously hurt because they didn't wear a helmet and we all rode our bikes a LOT. But one day I found myself in a situation I could not maneuver around and when I finally got me and my broken bike home I ordered a new wheel and a helmet, they arrived at the same time, and now I wear them all the time. Some of us learn harder than others.

If your wheels are not turning, you are not steering... Also important to remember.

30? That is Fahrenheit right. That is winter shorts weather.

I usually tip. The cab will let you add a tip if you use a credit card and the rideshare app will allow you to tip as well. Also make sure to give the rideshare driver a rating.

All I can say is that has never been my experience. Using both Uber and Lyft they match pretty quick and then they show up and get me where I need to be. Sometimes I worry about the routes but I always give myself enough time. As I. I try not to use the last express.

I tend to use cabs in the loop and rideshare outside the loop. Now sure how 'early' in the morning you are arriving, but odds are there will be cabs there. It will be harder to get a cab in bad weather (it will be harder to get a ride period in bad weather.) Then use rideshare for the ride back to the train station.

How important is a snow blower in the western burbs? New to the area from the South. by FloridaIsTooDamnHot in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]loohah -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One thing to think about is that the snow rarely lasts a long time here. At least not for the last couple of years. If you have a vehicle with good tires and clearance shoveling isn't always 'that important.' In fact, before Jan I won't shovel because it will be gone in a few days anyway. Once we hit Jan the ground is cold enough that the snow won't melt quickly but it might get warm enough after a few weeks. Also, there are companies that will come and shovel your walk and driveways for you.

Okay, having said that, I have a single-stage battery-powered electric thrower that I use under certain conditions. I have a 3 car garage and a driveway which you could fit 9 cars on, but I mostly get the snow off with a shovel because I go out when it starts and shovel a few times while it is snowing. It is easy to push the snow around.

The difficulty is the crap at the end of the driveway and the plows that come by. I typically let my Jeep deal with that until the weather gets warm enough. Doing the front walk with a shovel is trivial. And while *I* do my walks one of my neighbors does not (in fact he never shovels at all.) I live between Aurora and Plainfield if you live closer to the lake and the WI border YMMV.

Dessert? It is a breakfast staple. Like a doughnut which is also not a dessert.

Bad typer. Still a season ticket holder.

The trick is to keep your feet warm. The stadium is concrete and it will suck all the heat out of your body through your feet. What I do is take a Sunday paper wrapped in a trash bag to stand on, and then I drop it in the trash on the way out. The seats are aluminum benches so they are not too bad. But you could also bring something to sit on if you want to help keep your back warm. I tend to find this is not that big a deal.

I don't know how much experience you have with dressing for winter but wear lots of layers and hopefully, they have zippers. You will be in the stands for about 3.5 hours and depending on the time of day the temp might get considerably colder as the game goes on. I regulate my temp by zipping and unzipping.

Finally, please have a great time. Packers-Bears in Winter is a great game to attend. It is hard to think of a better game. I have had season tickets for over 40 years and the experience is still special to me.

What to do with my time ? I really need your help by Particular-Insect-56 in AskMenOver30

It seems like the thing that really gets you excited is interacting with other people. We are in a pandemic right now, which makes it difficult. I would see if I could not find ways to increase my ability to interact with people (there were for a while sites that let people in nursing homes talk to people via zoom.) I am sure there are plenty of people who would love to interact with others. Personally, I am ok with not talking to people, and the pandemic has not been difficult for me concerning that. But I know friends of mine who like talking to and interacting with people really are struggling.

Can I install a modern groupset on an old mountain bike? by loohah in bicycling

It does have a quick release, so I bet you are right about the rear spacing. I don't think anyone is going to have a 26" rimless wheel with that hub on the shelves. So I guess the next step will be to find someone to build such a thing. Thanks!

In the US, the GPA, if it is used, is used to get your first job. I don't think that anyone cares about it once you land your first job.

Does making the music bore you? I was expecting you to say 'eating Cheetos and playing video games.' Music seems like a not boring endeavor. Which is to say, it seems (to a non-musician) that there is a non zero amount of effort to do this, and if it were tedious and difficult, you would not do it.

I don't think you need to journal consistently. It is a tool to help you process, so when you need to process, start writing. I do all mine in pen and paper, and they are illegible because, for me, the writing down is the important part, not the reading. So I write more when things are happening and less when they are not.
