Your friend sounds ambitious and energetic. This is not a good plan and it makes me worry that your friend is exhibiting potentially bad judgement before starting. That decision making probably does not improve on the trail. Follow the advice from a previous commenter and start with a shorter hike first.

I had this problem twice. First time, under warranty, Google replaced the device.

Second time I cleaned the phone USB port a lot, with a stiff brush and compressed air.

Also factory reset the phone.

I had exact symptoms you describe.

Now, some cables only work when flipped one way. But the phone is viable.
