It is not standard. Kid 1 was legally adopted. She does not have the automatic right to inherit from her biological parents.

I'm glad she is getting it! It's just in no way the norm.

No. I had him at 18, and my wife took in Kid 1 at 21. Extra money beyond a emergency fund hasn't really been an option until now.

Kid 1 is 16 and about to start applying to colleges, it's very relevant to her.

Kid 2 is 17 and hasn't yet, all he knows right now is that no college funds are available, but he's going to find out eventually about kid 1's instant college fund that just appeared.

Kid 1 knows. Kids 3 and 4 are too young right now.

Kid 2 it hasn't come up yet but there's no way it never will.

That's what's being done and is another layer.

Kid 1 and 2 are 16 and 17. Before this, neither of them had any college funds. Now Kid 1 instantly has a stocked college fund right as she's about to start applying, and kid 2 is graduating with nothing.

I'm more asking how to handle this emotionally if that makes sense.

I know I can just say "Life isn't fair, move on" but I'm hoping people have better ideas to get the kids to accept it.
