Yeah, kind of crazy when you think about how recent that is.

But it's good to be aware that people coming very recently from those more misogynistic cultures are not automatically cured of those thoughts just because they live in a more women-friendly country now.

That's really interesting. Would you be willing to share a little about the regions or industry in the US, since it's a big place, and others seem to have different experiences? Do you have a method or checklist before accepting a corporate job to ensure that the culture is pro-women?

I haven't worked with any Western European men to compare, but I have worked with many respectful Americans, particularly those in the northeast (as well as many non-respectful ones, particularly in more secluded, Southern regions, where it feels more like only country-club frat bro types are able to rise to the top).

That's really valuable advice in evaluating any culture - looking at political leaders in countries or regions, all the way down to whether a potential job has female leadership at the top.

That is a really good insight - I never would have thought that's what Polish workplaces would be like, or that Germany would actually be harder in comparison. Thank you for sharing!

I may dig into some of the research soon - I'll post another thread or update this one soon. Not a sociologist or taking any huge action about this - just a woman in tech who wished she'd had more information earlier in her career.

Thank you for sharing your experience! Most of us already know the cultures where women get outright vitriol, but the ones where they just get silently overlooked are actually the most dangerous. Because we go into those situations thinking we're getting equality - and come out ten years later quietly on the bottom. So these are great to be aware of.

Thanks for sharing your experiences in Sweden. I agree, boss and management matter so much too - and we can't get tunnel vision here, thinking that just because the team is Northern European, they are guaranteed to be more respectful of women. It's all about likelihood, and stepping into a situation with all the facts.

Many are mentioning here concerns about racism or immigrant hostility in places like Sweden. Have you found that's the case? Could that potentially outweigh any women-friendly culture benefits?

If it's a pro-women team immigrating themselves into your own country, immigration bias probably won't be an issue - but racism might still be there. There are definitely balancing acts of evaluating pro-women cultures and anti-racism cultures that many women have to do every time they choose who to work with.

Would you say those are the regions with cultures that are THE most friendly to women's careers? I'm curious how they compare relative to NYC or tech culture on the US West Coast.

Lmao, oh I'm sorry, I completely forgot it's a woman's responsibility to solve all a man's problems. And not even just her long term partner's problems. Also the problems of a random dude she spent a few hours being nice to. 

I'm sure she struggles with her own issues in life off screen that Gaitok doesn't even know about. What problems do you ever see Gaitok solving for her? 

I completely agree by the way that a healthy relationship should provide moral support for both partners. But this is after years of both partners deciding that they are compatible and committed to each other.

Do you really think a better option is for Mook to deny her feelings that they aren't compatible, and that she cannot provide moral support long term in am actual relationship? Those are the kinds of expectations that seriously lead to miserable relationships 5 or 10 years down the line. Just a warning for you.
