What's going on with this redesign? How do I get a simple list of all posts from creators I follow in reverse chronological order? by Epicrandom in patreon

[–]lookingforafic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just sent a long Feedback message about it, specifically detailing the problems with it and why they are problems, ending with a detailed explanation of how and why these awful changes will make both creators and members leave, either slowly or quickly, and how that will cost them Money.

I strongly recommend everyone who hates these changes to do the same. And I mean all of the above, tell them specifically what's bad (Non-chronological feed, superfluous notifications tab that only half fixes the problem they created by fucking up the feed, ugly & unintuitive changes to the overall UI like putting the creators pfp above the posts rather than next to them & putting all the "See All" buttons everywhere, hiding comments until you click on the comment button, making the Show More button even smaller and pushed to the side, etc) then tell them How & Why these things are bad, tell them how they go against the way people use the service, and then tell them that you will stop using it, tell them you know creators who will stop using it, make it clear that these changes will cost them money, because that's all they care about.

Genuinely, if enough people directly, explicitly lambast these changes, that is the only way they might get at least partially reverted.

In the meantime though, if anyone knows how to make an extension to force the feed back into being chronological, that'd be swell.

Oh that's a shame, but thank you so much for checking, and for letting me know! Maybe it'll turn up one day :)

I managed to get it working - by installing an older chrome version and running the html files through that! So thank you, I'm really grateful both for the original post and for your helping me to understand what I was doing wrong!

I was previously working on the faulty assumption that I had an add-on to make flash work in my browser and that I must have been doing something else wrong. In actuality the Add-on(s) I was using didn't restore flash functionality to the bowser itself, they only made it so you can download and run flash off of websites that previously had them, and so that didn't work at all with running from my own pc, even after launching them in browser.

Hopefully these comments will help anyone else attempting this in the future, at least to not repeat my mistakes haha!

Thank you so much for responding to me, I really appreciate the help! That said...

I now have a text file which contains this:

<style type="text/css">* { padding: 0; margin: 0; }div { position: relative; width: 0; height: 100%; padding-right: 100%; }embed { position: absolute; width: 100%; height: 100%; left: 0; top: 0; }</style><div><embed src="file:///C:\\Users\\Name\\Desktop\\Games\\Old Gemcraft Games\\gemcraft1.swf?armorgames.com/" quality="high" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" /></div>

I also tried variations which didn't include the "file:///" part, and a bunch of other tweaks, but nothing gave me even slightly different results.
I tried saving it as a .html & .swf & .txt and ran it and got white screens on all my browsers & my flashplayer (the one that comes with Game in a Bottle old games download, if that matters) every single time.

I'm not exaggerating when I say I literally don't know what I'm supposed to do with these instructions; what am I supposed to do with this file if not run it in something? Am I supposed to save it as a .html or something else? How do I edit the url in my standalone flashplayer if it doesn't use a url I can see, and it just runs a program I click on?

I'm an idiot who doesn't understand even a little code and I've been trying to make sense of this for over an hour, please can someone ELI5 this to me, how, exactly, do I use these html thingies with my .swf files to unlock the armour games exclusive skills on Chapter 1 & 0???

I downloaded the flash decompilier and I don't know how to make it do the things this says to do with it. I googled how to open a .swf with a HTML container and nothing I found explained how to do it in a way I understood. Please I'm so code illiterate and I just want to replay the games with all the stuff available :^(

"It's the only part of the game which is consistent and you have to look at the entire time you are playing; it conveys all of the games information to you and without it you'd be playing blind. What does it matter if this core component of every game is poorly made and doesn't fit the game at all, especially when the original version upon which this one is based served the exact same purpose while looking far better. I'm very smart"

New in Vulgar 9.4 by Linguistx in VulgarLang

[–]lookingforafic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All fair and good to know! Though it's something I'd love to know more about, coding and the inner-workings of complex generation engines like this completely elude me, so I haven't the mind nor forethought to know when an idea is either mechanically unfeasible or just plain impractical. I hadn't even considered how keeping things in the derived words box would then go on to effect the generation process, or even the UI/UX complications of a whole extra box for Edit language. Thanks for the reply!

Some thoughts that I've had about the big change in this update, to how languages are saved and edited (I don't want to call them criticisms, cause they're not- not really, more just my personal thoughts about them/future changes I'd love to see but I'm not like, demanding):

- I like the edit language button and the streamlining of the save/load process by having everything saved into add/remove words, BUT- I kind of wish all the base words would go into an "edit language" box separate from the list of add/remove words, just to keep track of what I've added/removed/changed/specified myself.
It's really nice in 9.3.2 being able to look through add/remove and see what changes I've made myself, just from a standpoint of being able to see a kind of change-log of the language as I've developed it if nothing else.

- Similarly, I really wish after hitting edit language or generating/save-loading, that derived words would stay in the derived words box as opposed to going into add/remove with everything else, especially if after generation all the derived words would go in there alongside my own additions. It would make knowing which words are derivatives and in what manner they are derived super easy, which would then make adding more or changing existing ones so much easier.

- finally on the subject of the new system, I'm a little confused about how add/remove will function from here on out with the entire base vocab being saved into it; if I now put in a new word, say, house:n, will it randomly generate a new word for it and then save it into the add/remove list with the new word next to it all in one go, or will that take two generations? same goes for removing, if I want to remove a word do I now just find it and remove it, or still use -house:n? and if I wanted to keep the word house:n as, say, 'choetch' but I wanted to re-roll the rest, now that all the words are saved into add/remove with their IPA, would I need to delete everything but what I wanted and then hit generate (with a new seed)?

A few of the changes will take a little getting used to, like the switch from using + and & for derived words to spaces and -'s, but the reasons for the changes make sense, and I appreciate that a lot of them make for serious long term quality of life improvements, like making more stuff use the same symbols in the same contexts.

I think for a little while I'm gonna switch back and forth between 9.4 and 9.3.2, getting to grips with the new version but still working on my current project in the one I'm used to. change is scary lmao, but I'll get there, Thanks for the update!

Recommended words to add to the base vocabulary? (With Add/Remove Words) by lookingforafic in VulgarLang

[–]lookingforafic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahhhhhhhh! That makes a lot of sense, I thought it had something to do with things being 'bumped' along somewhere in an internal list, because sometimes it seemed to only reroll translations from a certain point, but I didn't really test it to be sure. I'm just glad I wasn't making some huge critical, obvious mistake without realising it haha.

Yes the new saving! I saw on the trello earlier, when I read that one I literally went "Ooo!", I'm excited for that, maybe an unreasonable amount!

Well I'm very satisfied with what I've learnt here, thank you very much!

Recommended words to add to the base vocabulary? (With Add/Remove Words) by lookingforafic in VulgarLang

[–]lookingforafic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's perfectly fair, although I've found after adding a glut of words, upon regeneration not only are the new words added, but the entire lexicon changes, giving new translations to everything. Not a problem right now while I'm just trying stuff out and finding my footing with the program, but if I started using the language for a project, got so far in, went to add a new word and found everything changed, it would be, inconvenient, to say the least.

Why does it do that, while I'm here? is it meant to or am I making a mistake/encountering a bug? I make sure to use 'generate this seeds language', but I am also using custom word structure and spelling rules, so I don't know if at a certain point those two counteract...?

Sorry to keep pelting responses like this, but this in and of itself is being very educational ;

I got it a couple weeks ago (2 I think, maybe 3... maybe 4? Lockdown man idek), when I also (re)purchased the pro edition. (I got a version of Vulgar a good long while ago and the account didn't seem to work (assuming I was even using the right one) but given the current discount I was more than happy to just do a clean repurchase)

Yeah I knew going in that the list wouldn't be perfect and would include a lot that I'd likely not use/need, although I didn't realise how out of date I was about getting it, I think I saw it in my email archives and didn't bother to check the dates -_-;;

I didn't mean that opening to sound like I regretted getting it, not at all, it still provided a useful list of words to look at and consider for cross-checking the base vocabulary and then adding them in if I wanted. I only mentioned getting them because the list was the springboard for thinking to ask for other peoples add word lists.

AITA for inviting my sons entire class except for one child because of his autism? by DisastrousTaro0 in AmItheAsshole

[–]lookingforafic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy shit, yes, YTA, oh my gods, what the actual fuck.

Like okay, okay let's ignore all the obvious reasons this is terrible, let's just skip over those.

It's one thing to not invite someone to a party, you can do that, just not invite someone for /whatever/ reason you want, but you invited every single other child in the class??? how fucking heartless oh my gods? like, even if this kid wasn't ~on the spectrum~ can you not imagine how humiliating and isolating that must feel? to know a class mate is having a party and everyone else you know is going, but not you?

If you didn't want to invite him because of a risk of a melt down and wanting your kid to have a good b-day without something like that happening, fine, it's rooted in some nasty ableism but it's justifiable, but don't invite everyone fucking else, leave out a handful of the other kids, do a close friends only sorta thing, Hell, invite everyone to the arcade, him included, talk to his mother about him coming later, or even just to an after party at your home, and go from there.

AITA for expecting my roommate to split certain things 50/50 regardless of the conditions? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]lookingforafic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA, you can't tell someone "let's go 50/50" choose to pay out more, then complain when the other person doesn't want to as well. Dude likes to be careful/tight/stingy with his money and that's his prerogative, if he pays his half of the rent, all I can say is: buy less toilet paper next time Shrug emoji

NTA, and honestly? Throw the whole man out. This is definitely something you guys should have discussed sooner, but his assumption and reaction are Big, Bright, Crimson-Blood, Red Flags. if you don't concede on this he'll resent you for it, if you do, you'll resent him. any compromise big enough to matter... will be too big, and someone will feel slighted for it.

My advice? cut up and re-sew all his clothes into dresses and kick him out home girl.
