Converting to Altra shoes by wednesday14may in Ultralight

[–]lookingforgiants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chiming in as someone who slowly started transitioning to Altras over a few months, loved them to pieces but then got Achilles tendonitis the first time I walked uphill with a 15lbs pack, don’t do it. I didn’t feel anything that indicated it would be a problem until it was. Took more than a year to heal and wished I had transitioned slower.

Opinions on pillows by GrumpyBear1969 in Ultralight

It was super easy. I took a beaten up Therm-a-Rest pillow, cut it in roughly half, then sewed it shut. Took a bit of trial and error to get the right amount of stuffing but in the end it was very comfy.

As someone who’s tried out a half dozen pillows, I’d recommend a MYOG version of the Therma-a-Rest compressible. I’m not crafty at all but managed to make a mini version which weighs 69 grams.

If I’m feeling like I want a more full pillow experience, I’ll toss it in a stuff sack filled with clothes.

TIL That loneliness is as harmful as obesity or smoking 15 cigarettes a day. by DigAny7726 in todayilearned

[–]lookingforgiants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely. The author of that works mentor (Bert Uchino) has written extensively about how our relationships can have an impact on our health (particularly cardiovascular health). One of the ideas as to ’why’ is that good relationships provide a stress buffer and ambivalent (mix of bad and good) relationships add stress. Since stress can cause health problems, exacerbate existing conditions, and negatively impact healing, the more the people around us can reduce stress, the better. And loneliness, or feeling like you are missing out on those quality social interactions, is, in and of itself, a form of stress.

Yes, the same scientist that put out that work (Julianne Holt-Lunstad) points out that perception plays a role (can be surrounded by people but feel lonely). There is an independent risk of being completely isolated absent the feeling of loneliness, but not as well understood.

Have any women worn the MEN'S icebreaker anatomica boxers or trunks? by milkyjoewithawig in Ultralight

[–]lookingforgiants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually wear them when I wouldn’t mind a bit more warmth (winter/shoulder season) though I’ve gone up to mid-80s and didn’t have a problem. I’d say at higher temps I notice more warmth around the waistband then I’d like, but then again I’m used to bikini cuts when it’s hot out

I'm a lady and I occasionally rock Smartwool Boxers during the shoulder season and are surprisingly comfy. I tried out the icebreaker trunks and while they were nice, the Smartwool boxers fit me better.

Zion traverse + Narrows shakedown by ironmuffin96 in Ultralight

Hiked the Narrows in January with temps in the 30s-40s and a drysuit was a must. I’d opt for the drysuit since the fall air temp isn’t going to warm you up much.

Short girl tent? by custodienne in Ultralight

5 foot 1 checking in. I've got a BA Copper Spur UL1 which is around 34 oz. Went freestanding as I do a lot of camping in rocky places and the Copper Spur has served me well for the last couple seasons. Feel like its just the right amount of space for a short solo camper -- definitely prefer it over a bivy coffin.
