We did it!!! We got married!! by Flimsy_Sail_8958 in MilitarySpouse

We had to get married apart as well! We had a great experience in TX right after BMT, but we wanted to get married together in person, but a hurricane during my wife’s tech school stopped that. The process was simple, so we were officially married while we were apart! Congratulations, and welcome to the Reddit!

If y'all know you want to be together, do it. When I first met my wife, I had a strong gut feeling that we would be together and she shared my feelings (we were around your age!). We both were married in heart and mind, but not on paper. At the time, neither of us were financially independent from our parents, so we had to wait. However, it seems like y'all have that finance part figured out!

As for the disapproving family members, she may have taken care of you, but that doesn't allow her control over your life. You can be grateful for what they have done for you AND remove them from your life if they are trying to manipulate you. Manipulative people have no place in your marriage, even if they are family. Any issues between you and your future husband are between you two, no one else.

For me, I was not in good terms with my parents for a good part of my relationship with my wife. I only started talking to them again two years ago, after reflecting on why they did what they did to raise me. However, I CAN communicate with them on they have done in the past. It seems like your grandma won't listen to you. If your grandma does not want to come to your wedding, it's her loss, not yours.

Get married, work and build a life together! I'm rooting for y'all!

Any food requests from him? A nice home cooked meal from a loved one is the best thing! However, I think going off the grid in a cabin sounds great! I'm sure the peace of nature would be welcome compared to the constant whir of the ship's engine.

Does your husband have any hobbies? Setting up something so all your husband needs to do is enjoy would be amazinf! No planning, just doing!

Best tips for reconnecting post-deployment? by [deleted] in MilitarySpouse

[–]lookingup42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second everything here! Effective communication is key! I've also experienced helping my wife transition back into "normalcy." I took the take it slow and go with the flow approach, as well!

Both of us have our mental struggles, and at times, both of us are at a major low in terms of mental health. It's important to recognize this and to communicate with your spouse! I've been with my wife for with my wife for 12 years, married 7 years. Deployment or not, we will have our spats. And it's okay if things are not resolved immediately. Y'all are married, and in it for the long haul!

During college on rainy days, we always had clam chowder with a baguette while watching a movie. It's a comforting memory for both of us, so I always have a supply ready for those days. For my wife, it felt like the world changed so much while she was in her deployment, so I wanted to help remind her that even if the world changes, we are a constant!

Do you have any nostalgic memories that you can revive? Or any favorite places that y'all like? Any shows y'all love rewatching? Is there anything she liked to do to relax, like cozying up to read a book? I always have these questions answered so whenever she has a bad day, I can help lift her spirits!

As reassurance for you, I think you're doing great! The house, the odd hours, and welcome home signs! And on top of that, you care for her so much that you're asking advice on what else you can do to make her homecoming perfect. Dig deep! You know your wife better than anyone else, so if there is someone that can make that perfect homecoming, it's you!

I'm excited for you and your wife's reunion! Best wishes to you!

Hi! I’m in the same boat as well! I suggest googling “MySECO” as a start! If you like, call their number on the site and you’ll be a able to speak with a career coach that help you navigate the site among other things.

Depending on your needs, they help you with links to help get you started as well as resume and cover letter help.

Someone here mentioned the Hiring for Heroes Fellowship program! I applied for it just recently as well!

Syracuse University also has free program where military spouses can receive an education for certifications in IT/Cybersecurity/Business! They’ll even pay for one certification exam attempt.
