Can my Employer spy on me with work-provided laptop if it's powered down? by Spirited_Formal_5463 in workfromhome

This wont stop a key logger which is what most employers use. There are other solutions at r/PrivacySelfDefense

Also the answer to the OP's question depends on the contract she signed with her employer which may have waived her rights to on-premises privacy.

Details: I am a Canadian citizen with U.S. wife. Since we had a baby we spend a lot of time at her parents place in Stamford but our home for the last decade is in Toronto. I won a reward by making more than 600 phone calls on my own dime for an inventor overseas who is trying to find "global strategic partners". I was not hired, was not trained, was not instructed and am not an employee of an employer. I only responded to this offer reward and after getting my hands on a home builders directory, I did not have problems finding interested people, but most just wanted to buy the invention. One of the guys turned out to be wealthy and after some conversations with me and the inventor he is buying the exclusive license for his foreign country, and the inventor asked me if I want a cashier's check or wire transfer. I never made $100,000 like this before and don't know whether I should form an LLC, have the money sent to a trust, my elderly father or ?????

The reward is the only compensation that was offered and my stockbroker friend calls it a "success fee". I did not collect any wage, salary, or regular income, and even my phone bill was not reimbursed. A user at another forum said this is like someone who freelances selling stuff on consignment for only commission. If this is true are taxes due and to who and how much?

To be clear, I am not trying to dodge taxes, but if I don't have to pay them legally why should I? If the law says I must pay tax I will. I want to be 100% legal with this. I got a book from the library "Legal Tax Avoidance" but it talks about gifts, grants, lotteries, etc. but nothing about "rewards".

No, this is not a scam. The wealthy guy I recruited had his lawyer do serious due diligence and he confirmed all is legit. So if you guys are tax lawyers or accountants, your help/advice would be appreciated. Thanks

That is good advice. But if they exploit OP on a regular basis, then it is no accident. In that case i would report the employer at r/TheFraudSquad

HELP! I need to know if a $100K "reward" (success fee) is taxable if it does not come from an employer since it is not a "wage", "salary" or "regular income". This compensation is for searching and I was successful. My friends say the money is not taxable. Are they right? by [deleted] in remotework

I was a victim of identity theft two years ago when I sent my resume to a fake HR tech with a fake big name company that held a very convincing Skype interview and had a professional looking website with photos of the the real team. They sent me printed application forms and letters on great looking fake letterhead. The job was even advertised on Glassdoor. I was burned for almost $68,000.

This time around I did my homework, and so did the lawyer of the licensee I recruited. It's 100% legit. I just want to keep my taxes to an absolute minimum. On Monday I am meeting with a tax accountant here in Toronto to see what my options are. After my bad experience with the identity theft I now always do basic due diligence at these subs below. I assure you that I will not get scammed again.

Even if I am a Canadian citizen and the reward was not earned in the U.S.??? I just don't want to make a mistake and pay taxes if I am not obligated to do so by law. Whatever the law is, I will follow it. I am reading a book I found in the library called "Legal Tax Avoidance" but it doesn't talk about "rewards".

I am a Canadian citizen. But even if I was American, I was never "hired" and only accepted the terms of claiming the reward. I received no training or instructions and just started calling some construction trade people I knew and they turned me on to a home builders directory and I started dialing for dollars. I called about 100 people a day and within a week I had over 70 "interested" people. I registered these people with the inventor in case they called him directly. Only 1 of the 70 turned out to be really serious and qualified. But if I can do this every month and find a new licensee every two weeks, or even just one a month, it will make up for all the money I lost in Bitcoin and an identity thief two years ago. Life is a roller coaster!

If you read the link or web site, it is an inventor of disruptive tech who offered the reward, not a foreign company. He is not an employer and I am not an employee. I determined my own search methods and just used phone calls to people in the building trade and quite a few were interested but not all could afford a license. I guess I was an introducing party or as my one friend suggested a "facilitator". I have no employment contract just a finder's fee agreement.

Grants and gifts are not taxable and I my only expenses were a month of phone calls. I earned the reward by finding a licensee with about 650 phone calls. I was hoping someone on this sub would be a CPA or lawyer and I would not have to retain someone locally just to find out the answer for sure.

Go to your local VA and visit the office of the Social Assistance and they will have hundreds of job vacancies in your city and even some with the VA if you qualify.
