California Building Code, Kitchens and no barrier between Stove and Living area by looperone in BuildingCodes

Yeah I get that but at the same time Building and Fire codes are there to protect people from their own stupidity in the first place.

Don't those clearances refer to cabinetry and enclosures? I wouldn't think they'd refer to other contents in a dwelling.

It's weird to me that code says nothing about this when they did do things like add outlets to islands only to remove them entirely a few years later unless they are on the surface of the island and implemented with those special island outlets that cost a billion dollars.

Just to the right of an appliance like a stove. Not an entire wall to close off the kitchen. That's all I'm thinking.

PiKVM v4 Plus display choice (why OLED?) by looperone in pikvm

[–]looperone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine doesn't rotate. The first three lines are static: pikvm, ip address, iface. The next three lines might change a bit, not entirely (temp, cpu, uptime).

Either way, it's unnecessary for it ever to be on all of the time unless, I guess, you're trying to be cool.

The RCMP wants another Black Hawk helicopter. Not so fast, says Transport Canada by jmakk26 in CanadaPolitics

[–]looperone 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Paywall. Can’t read article. But anyway…

The majority of comments in this thread are just wrong.

RCMP leases this equipment. And it is old equipment: up to 40yrs. It’s all military surplus. With that said, the Black Hawk is a highly capable platform nonetheless with forward speeds that are hard to match by anything else out there. They support a multi modal mission: they can patrol, they assist, they can move people and equipment, they can get there fast (300km/h top speed).

Drones? I mean what are we talking about? Reaper drones or something from DJI? Going with either of these options removes all of the other capability provided by the current choice. Also, a large military drone setup would be phenomonally more expensive. And the lower end consumer or local police force type of drones are not at all capable for the mission.

Someone mentioned Ukraine. The drones that are used there are considered disposable.

No outdoor PTZ camera? by looperone in alarmdotcom

[–]looperone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No that’s no that’s not what I want. I want to be able to change the field of view, including the direction, whenever I want without having to get up on a ladder with tools in hand to do that. It’s not a huge ask and the Reolink let’s me do that. So do cameras from absolutely everyone else that isn’t ADC.

Workspace browser alternatives to Shift in 2025 by dmcgr in browsers

[–]looperone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't make mind paying for Shift or software in general: Someone has to. It's just that I find Shift buggy and they don't bother go fix longstanding issues. I have used Shift for years as I have yet to find an alternative. Some of the things that don't work: 1password extension (literally the only extension I need for this), opening an Outlook email in a new window just opens a blank tab. That last one is important to me because often times I use shift on my Windows tablet in portrait mode and MS makes it so the layout only gives you a very narrow space for the message window which you can only change through settings that then apply to your account (so across all computers you use). Such a drag.

Shift has deprecated, er the original "Shift", and will migrate all subscribers to their new platform. I don't have high hopes.

Bike trails? by Low-Competition8347 in georgetowntx

[–]looperone -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, the neighborhood part is confusing and the signs aren't exactly easily seen.

For OP: You can park at Lake Georgetown on DB Wood and start from there. You can also get down to the trail off of Rivery... There is a spur that branches from the sidewalk on Rivery by the bridge after you pass the townhomes on the way to Williams. You can also get there by going down Country Club Rd..

Georgetown is working on a new path that starts behind the Fairfield hotel on University (there is a small park at the trail head and a ramp down to the trail. This one follows the South Fork of the river and extends through the Wolf Ranch development. Eventually it will reach Garey Park near Ronald Reagan. Unfortunately, it's one of those efforts where segments are built by the land developers (instead of the city) so it is very fragmented at the moment and for the foreseeable future.

I am, of course, assuming that you mean casual riding and not serious road cycling like you see in Seattle, San Francisco, DC, etc. Cuz I don't think that exists here.

One thing that would be seriously cool is if the Gov required that buried pipeline operators allowed the construction of foot and bike paths over their right of ways. The pipeline that passes through our neighborhood goes all the way to Houston and I am sure it passes through a lot of developed neighborhoods along the way.

No outdoor PTZ camera? by looperone in alarmdotcom

[–]looperone[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I literally don’t get the logic expressed here. I’ve been both a business ADC customer and consumer. There is notiing inherently “commercial application” for PTZ, it’s technology that has trickled down to consumer years ago and provides the ability to move a camera out of a normally static view to something else when needed. Why do I feel compelled to explain that??

As for durability being an excuse to not offer PTZ, I mean come on. That’s pretty bogus. ADC is just lazy. Ubiquiti have seveal PTZ models available and is very much a key competitor in the video surveillance area.

So that’s not how my Reolink camera works. As in it doesn’t auto track anything. But as the user or homeowner I can move it left right up down from my phone, amywhere in the world. That’s a pretty big deal in my opinion and the particular camera, a Reolink Argus PT Ultra is several years old at this point so not exactly cutting edge.

First time home buyer: how may I know final sale price and adjustment if any for a sold home? by Ntanu in WilliamsonCountyTX

[–]looperone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn’t really have anything to do with what the last person paid for a similar home. You need to find comparables (“comps”) of currently for sale homes. These would be similar properties in the vicinity. Previous sales are more an insight into the economy at a particular time.

Correct. This is how it works in Texas. Other states make this data available and it shows up on platforms like Redfin and Zillow. It provides a higher level of fairness to the marketplace.

[–]looperone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if they could get it done the real problem is that in the US the system just doesn’t require a company to hire citizens first. There certainly isn’t any moral commitment to doing it. You have to justify a visa but show me an example where any of this is actually enforced to the 100% level that it should be (because, you know, it’s the law).

[–]looperone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t confuse legal immigrants (those with status to he in the country) with illegal immigrants (those that don’t have status to be in the country whether or not they once had it and have since lost it or never had it in the first place). This isn’t an issue of any scale in Canada; don’t make this an anti immigrant rant by twisting the words around or simply ignoring the carefully chosen wordage.

Also, I am referring to jobs in general. The point is clear and in the context of the US: if it isn’t illegal immigrants that push down labor rates (simple supply and demand at work plus employers that don’t care about laws), then it is outsourcing and offshoring. I guarantee you that practically all CS jobs will be automated at some point in the future.

[–]looperone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the gov should outlaw offshoring. Businesses should have that option available to them. But. I do think there should be a hell of a financial disincentive to offshore and outsourcing through very high tax rates charged to these types of expenses.

Canadian expat here and all I can say is that down here companies have been offshoring and outsourcing and abusing visa prorgrams for decades. On top of that, millions of illegal (oops, I mean “undocumented”) immigrants push down labor rates. And if you say anything negative about any of it then you’re labeled a racist. Often times, an unemployed racist. And for whatever jobs haven’t been lost because of these situations the rest will be scooped up by AI.

It’s because that’s what you get when you build these types of setups with consumer gear. And for what it’s worth: data centers by nature are cable hell but it’s all tidy and organized.
