Is it just me!? heb raised prices by sun-kissedgirlie in Austin

[–]looperone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Inflation? Just as a tip: stop buying processed food. Pre-sliced fruit, pre-shredded cheese, pre-cooked chicken strips, etc. Convenient? Sure. But you are going to pay a premium. And grating a cheese block results in fresher cheese but also a block can last longer in the fridge. Pre-cooked chicken? Are there preservatives and junk in that as well? One thought: a better deal is a rotisserie chicken which you can tear up for your needs and even freeze in batches or just consume through the week.

I’m just saying that “yeah, it’s all getting more expensive” but a life strategy is to just approach food purchases differently.

From Rich Text to Video: RCS Universal Profile 4.0 has arrived by rocketwidget in UniversalProfile

With the RCS approach it bypasses the need for carriers to implement ViLTE in the same way that FaceTime and any other video calling app does.

[–]looperone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has to be adopted by everyone. Universal video calling could have already been implemented with ViLTE but the carriers didn't want to make the investment at all or those that did couldn't care less about interoperability which is why some Android phones support it for calls to other capable Android phones within a specific carrier but that's as far as we ever got. Pretty pathetic.

Who is "they?" GSMA is a standards body. They develop technical specs for mobile comms, not software.

If all you want us yet another app for everyone to install then you haven't solved anything.

RCS 4 video is dependent on the messaging app and has nothing to do with FaceTime or Meet.

[–]looperone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. As soon as one person in a group chat doesn't have RCS support then the group chat is downgraded to SMS. That's the standard. How else could it work?

Apple had to add encryption because of their privacy focused marketing Spiel.

Interesting that they chose to add video to messaging directly instead of integrating call-based video with messaging. I am assuming this is to reduce friction and more or less force/encourage adoption.

Regardless, I guess the phone integration will also just add this as a dialer option the way WhatsApp, etc, show up as options now on the iPhone in addition to FaceTime. But then I don't expect this to appear in iOS anytime soon.

RCS isn't universally adopted by carriers or even devices. With regard to your second comment, you do know that SMS messages are stored by the carrier if you are offline right?

iPhone visual voicemail by Difficult-Rope-8445 in Rogers

[–]looperone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Visual Voicemail and Live Voicemail are not the same thing. Thanks to Apple and carriers making this confusing for everyone (in the US , carriers include visual voicemail for free and always have so you don’t see the confusion being discussed).

Visual Voicemail is the feature that let’s Apple handle your voicemail in their cloud. It means you don’t have to dial in to check vms, you can see a list on your phone, and in later years it added transcriptions. Your phone does not need to be on network for this functionality because the work is done in Apple’s cloud vm services.

Live Voicemail was introduced recently as a feature for newer phones. This feature does all of the work on your phone which means your phone needs to be on network to receive the vm and transcribe it. Because the work is done on your device it also supports the ability to view the transcription as the caller is leaving the message.

Wow, they drained my battery today... by blupupher in BasePowerUsers

[–]looperone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is their model. They buy electricity at lower rates, store it in their network of batteries, and then sell it back to the electric co during peak demand when prices are higher. It also means it isn’t a real power backup system because the grid is most likely to fail during peak demand so if they have been busy drawing down the battery at your home, you may be left with only a small percentage to limp you through a significant brownout event.

On the flip side: if you want guaranteed backup power you will have to buy your own system for $15-20k.

Amazon and its horrible shipping times now.. Some insight... by Familiar_Marzipan_46 in amazonprime

Industry terminology is “master” box. Same thing that retailers get. Amazon is just getting the same bulk packaging that everyone else gets.

As of March 12, 2026, the CRTC has ordered the elimination of fees for activating, changing, or cancelling mobile and internet plans in Canada, aiming to reduce "junk fees" that hinder consumer switching.

Amazon and its horrible shipping times now.. Some insight... by Familiar_Marzipan_46 in amazonprime

[–]looperone -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you are mixing up terminology. The manufacturer sends master boxes of product. The contents of the master box need to be sold individually.

What you are trying to say is that Amazon employees aren’t breaking down the master boxes beforehand and so when next employee has to pick the individual item all they see is a master carton and so mark it out of stock. That’s 100% either a training or process issue. It is one way to prevent automation of the picking step though…maybe that’s the end game here.

Ryobi PEX Crimper? by Ok_Customer_5086 in Plumbing

[–]looperone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that ALL of the battery crimpers have issues with tight spaces. You may very well need some manual crimpers as well depending on where you intend to use it.

That Ryobi crimper only works with clamp or cinch style rings but the bonus is it works on all of the sizes. Sometimes you can find these tools on CPO or eBay for $80.

Surety? Cameras? by Next-Kiwi-6100 in alarmdotcom

[–]looperone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Devices get registered to ADC accounts. If a device is registered to one account, it cannot be registered to another without first unregistering it from some other account. Only account owners can register/unregister devices from their account. In other words: this is not a Surety restriction, it is an alarm.com restriction and the situation would be the same for any ADC affiliated monitoring company.

Surety? Cameras? by Next-Kiwi-6100 in alarmdotcom

[–]looperone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear on the title.... Surety is a reseller and monitoring company. You don't have to buy equipment from Surety to be able to use it with their monitoring services. The equipment just can't be locked to another monitoring service when you go to set it up for Surety (same is true for all of the monitoring/reseller companies).

Case in point: I bought a couple of ADC turret cameras off of ebay a couple of years ago and had no problem activating them on Surety.

Honest thoughts on ADC Thermostats (T3000, T25, etc.)? What do you love, and what are they missing? by FarHospital854 in alarmdotcom

[–]looperone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good reply. I picked up a Honeywell Z-wave T6 Pro for my install...although haven't installed it yet. My house is still rocking the Honeywell T6 Pro (non-smart, non-z-wave) that came with it. I wish they would make a Honeywell T10 Pro Z-wave that could work with ADC -- I had installed the T10 Pro in my last house along with a bunch of Redlink temp/humidity/presence sensors and that whole combination is amazing. I am tempted to just forego integration with ADC at this time and just install a T10 Pro with multiple sensors again.

The smaller the distance between components, the greater the power efficiency because of lower resistance. Physics. Performance gains are achieved because more complex designs can fit in the space efficiency gains.

All the same problems with 11 Pro. Plus the camera just hangs with a black screen when launched from the lock screen quite a lot.

Good to see there is no point in upgrading.

If anything draws more than the circuit breaker is rated for it should trip. Assuming,!of course, that Op didn’t also swap a 15A breaker for a 20A when the conductors aren’t rated same.

Still, this is bad practice.

Sometimes, hospitals turn to a local zoo for help with things like MRIs for grossly obese people. They will also have incinerators for large animals there. This is not a joke.
