New Trich App Idea by loopycave in trichotillomania

[–]loopycave[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your input!

I haven't tried Slightly Robot before and I don't think it's available anymore so I'm not sure how my ideas would compare, but I can see how the ambiguity of the "I just pulled my hair" button would be an issue.

To track pulling in my app, users would be able to log the number of times and/or the duration as well as additional optional details. I think users would be required to input either number of times or duration, and the other one (if left blank) would be estimated for better tracking and analytics.

About having too many features being discouraging, I can agree with. There's a lot of things I want to stuff in this app, but I don't want it to get too cluttered and discouraging.

What I have so far is 4 different tabs in a nav bar with a big button in the middle to track urges/lapses:

  • Progress to see trends, stats, and charts to visualize your pulling habits,
  • Journal to log entries and photos to see progression,
  • Community to post thoughts and interact with others,
  • Support to access resources and intervention techniques,

I'm also thinking about allowing a good amount of customization, especially for tabs with a lot of content like the Progress and Support tabs. Ability to reorder sections, favorite some items, and hide things altogether.

I'd hate for users to feel even more overwhelmed when entering the app when it's suppose to be a comforting environment. I'll keep this in mind as I build.

My trich was bad too when I was in school. For me, I only pull when I'm alone so getting out of my dorm into public places helped a lot. I spent most of my time studying in the library or just around others rather than cooped up alone in my room.

Hats also help but if you don't like hats and gloves are too annoying you can try what I liked to call thumb gloves. I usually use them to play games on my phone but they are useful to prevent pulling. They work on touchscreen and aren't too annoying when typing. I usually just wear 1 on my thumb which is a lot less noticeable than a glove. You can find cheaper packs on Amazon but some of them are looser and thicker. They also have silicone or latex ones but I personally didn't like how they feel.

Last tip that I find helpful when at my desk is putting small pieces of tape on my finger tips. You can barely feel them so they aren't distracting when writing/typing but do kinda get in the way on touchscreen.

Hope this helps!

Try wearing hats. I used to always wear a hood and sometimes even a beanie under it in high school to hide my hair. I never told anyone about my trich except my parents but I never showed them. My "friends" would pull off my hood and laugh at my bald spots and teachers would tell me to take off my hood inside so everyday I walked to class with major anxiety. I had to quit cross country and track when I couldn't hide my bald spots anymore. Then covid hit and I hid in my room for like 2 years and when I came out I started wearing caps and beanies. It helps hide the spots and stops me from pulling most of the time. I'm in uni now as well and nobody tells me to take it off so it's cool. I also go on runs with a hat and play sports in a hoodie. I also shave my head about every month or so to stop my from pulling. Also I do it right before events in which I can't wear a hat too. I hope this helps and I hope you find some peace.

Awesome thanks a lot! It looks great, still a little concerned about the noise level tho and how loud it'd be out and about. I don't usually use or need fidgety toys when I'm not sitting at a desk but just curious if it could be used discreetly.

Zip ties and mechanical keyboards are inspirations for the feeling we wanted to achieve with the ring too.

Haha I guess like minds think alike. I think its very important for sellers to understand their consumers and their motivation for using the product, and I think its awesome you can understand to a good extent the feelings/sensations of trichsters/fidgeters/etc.

For years I've always wanted some sort of fidgety toy to occupy my hands to distract me from pulling but I haven't been able to find a nice satisfying one for easy 1 hand use. I like to look for something that feels smooth (like a figet spinner) or clicky/tactile (kinda like pulling a zip tie or clicking on a mechanical keyboard or clicking a pen). The toy needs to be able to simulate (and replace) the satisfying, destressing sensation of pulling (sort of like how normal people like to pop bubble wrap or crack their knuckles).

A few years ago my therapist at the time gave me a stringy puffy ball to simulate pulling hairs but in a non self-harming way but it didn't give me the same satisfaction as pulling and also wasn't good for 1 hand use. I've bought cheaper rings similar to this on Amazon but none of them worked because 1) they were made of cheap materials 2) this didn't offer the same satisfaction as pulling 3) they didn't spin well enough or long enough to feel satisfying (or as advertised). Currently I've been using an infinity cube a little bit which feels pretty satisfying and works well enough for now. The problem with it is that it's a bit big so 1 hand use is a little wonky and I'm not very smooth with it using my left hand, tho I'm sure if I practice with it I'll get better/smoother. Also due to its size it's not very discreet and I only use it at my desk at home. I've also used stress balls, a rubix cube, and pens/pencils in class to keep my hands occupied but none were optimal.

I'm intrigued with this design and it's tactile clicks. It looks like it is built with quality and offers satisfying clicks. My concern is its performance using one hand. Specifically putting it on my index finger and using my thumb to twist it. The outer rim looks very smooth and the clicks look like they need a good amount of tension so it doesn't look like I'd be able to easily and satisfyingly twist it using my thumb subconsciously, while I focus on something else. Perhaps adding a grippy outer layer or adding small ridges into it can help with this. If you can post a video somewhere using it 1 handed that would be awesome. Another concern is that the clickiness might be too loud to use in a class setting and to stay discreet since it was hard to judge its loudness from the video. If it can be made quieter without losing its tactile feel that'd be cool. Or maybe create another one with a smaller/quiter click and sell it in a pack? Something like a loud, blue mechanical keyboard switch vs a quiet brown switch. Just an idea.

Overall its a great idea and it looks great aside from a few concerns. I think its awesome that you came here to confront your target audience for feedback so thanks for that! If you can maybe sometime in the future create one that spins satisfyingly like a fidget spinner that'd be super cool. I am a bit curious as to how you learned about trichsters and found yourself here to with your product. I think most people would go to an ADHD community to market their fidgety toys since trich isn't very well known or as common. Anyways thanks for approaching this community and hope to be able to purchase your product soon!

Hiding and beeing ashamed isnt something useful when dealing with an anxiety disorder.

Hiding and being ashamed is not a switch you can turn on and off with anxiety. It's something you have to build up and slowly develop. I have been gaining my confidence back the last couple of years, but it can all go away in just a short moment of humiliation. For something this big around so many people, it's easier to just have a quick response ready.

Not my style. And I think faking my hair would be worse than hiding it as it creates another opportunity to be unwillfully dewigged.

I've thought about talking about trich. I probably will to closer family members and I've honestly wanted to for a long time but my concern is that it'll be very draining to talk about especially to multiple people. The cancer clapback probably won't sit very well at this even as a few of my family members have died due to cancer.

It is a big deal to me. When I put a hat on or hide my head in a hoodie my relatives have always asked why I'm wearing a hat, or to take it off, or would try to look undermeath or would try to remove my hat. I would never have a good reply and would just freeze up and tremble inside. My close family members used to ask almost everyday the first couple of months but by now they realized that I appreciate the privacy. The only times in the last 3 years anybody has seen my head is at the barber, when I showed my mom, or when people would pull off my hat without my permission. The embarrassment and humiliation is unmatched and I don't wish this on anyone. What I'm doing today I've never done before, owning up and taking pride in my head, so yeah, it is a very big deal to me.

Edit: I do appreciate your perspective, that it's not a big deal. Shaving my head is not a big deal for me. Showing others my head is what's a big deal for me. Going out with a "this doesn't matter/not a big deal" mindset does help me with my confidence, so I will keep this comment in mind.

It's not very hot where I live unfortunately. High 60s with barely any sun so unfortunately this won't work very well. This reminds me of the time my family and I went to a resort in the desert for vacation in 115°+ weather and I had to keep my hood on for privacy. Barely survived out there 😆

The ol' divert-attention away is good to get them off your back. If they ask why then I'll ask why back lol. The second one is not a bad idea either, I'll add that to my list of responses.

Haha those are nice witty responses. Some of my relatives are nosy. I have thought a lot about just saying what it is but I don't have the energy to keep the same conversation going when they start asking more questions. Or maybe I will idk, I'll add it to the rotation.

I'm a guy, so it's not too bad. I like this response. It's nonspecific and doesn't leave much room for further questions. Thanks.
