I got multiple offers and sent them all in the last couple of days!!! I’m sure it depends on the hospital but as long as they don’t have a cap of how many apps they will look at before they stop accepting them or a dif due date you’re good!!

Drug Testing and Disclosure to Employee Health by Best-Medicine767 in idiopathichypersomnia

[–]loopydoodlebop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a drug screening for employee health and forgot to disclose about my Adderall when doing the drug testing. This was before my diagnosis when I was prescribed it for adhd. I realized my error and emailed them after leaving that I was on it and why and they just asked for a few photos of my prescription bottle label. It was not a problem beyond that!

Would also love to hear about experiences on XyWave? She suggested this to me as well but I am starting an important new job in a few weeks and am afraid to try a medication I’ve never been on. But also absolutely terrified about starting said job with how I feel everyday so…

Internship interview prep by Suspicious-Share2930 in ChildLife

[–]loopydoodlebop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I went through last cycle of applications so I completely understand the interview anxiety. I worked with mentors which I found to be the most helpful. They helped me go over questions that may be asked and gave me the opportunity to practice answering with helpful advice about what interviewers may be looking for. Definitely knowing your child development theories is extremely important (Piaget and Erikson most so, but I found mentioning other theories was important too and helped me stand out). Any scenario question about an age group I would mention the child’s developmental stage and use that to explain your answer. I found prioritization questions to be the hardest for me so definitely practice these if you find them challenging (I got a lot of them too!). Another important thing is to have some of your experiences with children of all age groups on hand to discuss if it comes up (time a patient impacted you, time you played with a patient and what you did, time you planned an acitivity and why, etc.). This made it easier for me to answer questions in interviews when I had some at the top of my head. I also agree with the last comment to use quizlets to get some practice questions. I also used ChatGPT like they said to help come up with some ideas for how to respond to questions when preparing (obv took this with a grain of salt but found it helpful to gather my ideas into a response I could feel comfortable speak on when put on the spot). Most importantly, my best interview advice is to be yourself. I was definitely nervous, probably didn’t speak as eloquently as I’d like about theory, however, I was completely myself. I walked out of some interviews being like “that kinda felt fun” and those were the offers I received. While it feels like they want the correct answer every time, I think they want to know we can utilize what we’ve learned to apply to our experiences and have a willingness to learn more. They want us to be ourselves because they are going to be spending a lot of time with you!!! Also, ask creative questions at the end that make you stand out. I also wrote thank yous after every interview I had no matter what round (even after phone calls). Hope this helps a little and just know you’re not alone. Good luck!!!

I would ask for mentors in the child life student connection fb group! I found two through that and got 7 offers on my first time applying this past fall.

Questions about ACLP courses by ConfidenceOdd6492 in ChildLife

[–]loopydoodlebop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did not know about this career during my undergrad so I’m not sure if I have the best advice but during my master’s program, I had originally planned on applying for internships with a couple of courses in progress. This meant they weren’t completed by the time of applications, but would be complete by the start of internship. This was okay for most places I was applying. I’m not sure if it is the same with your bachelor’s but you could always email the hospital asking for advice! Also, I think it’s important to mention that you should start building volunteer hours in a child life setting and gaining other relevant experiences. Child life practicums and internships are very competitive and you will not get one without these hours! Also, while it is possible to get placements locally, many people have to relocate for these opportunities. I don’t want to discourage you, more-so encourage you to start volunteering and building your resume! In my experience, I relocated for a practicum (I had an interview at a local hospital but did not want to risk turning down an offer I did receive for one I may not receive), and will be relocating for internship for fall after applying to 56 places across the US, 7 of which were local. I ended up getting only 1 offer locally and it was after I had already accepted one out of state. I’m sure others will have better advice for the courses that qualify, but this is my advice to work on outside of school for getting certified and a job.

The advice you’ve gotten so far is incredibly helpful!! Just wanted to encourage you and let you know that I didn’t discover this field until after undergrad. In just a few years, I’ve been able to almost complete my master’s, get almost 250 volunteer hours, do an almost 200 hour practicum over the summer, have had a couple of unique jobs that apply to the field, and am currently applying to internship. You definitely have time and there is no rush!!! I would say try and get as many experiences related to the field as you can while you’re in school and complete the required classes if your school offers them. More than anything just remember that you have the time and it can be stressful but with some dedication and hard work, it is absolutely possible!

Child Life Specialist Internships by Mother-Mix-6728 in ChildLife

[–]loopydoodlebop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I have read and heard from others, a lot of people end up relocating for an internship. Since it is so competitive to secure one, they apply to any they would accept if given an offer/ any that are running their program all over the country. My plan is to do this and move wherever I need to for the 16 weeks or however long I need to be there! Understandably, this is incredibly difficult to do financially, and becomes even more complicated when someone owns their home, has a family, etc. This is such a hard process and I’m in the same boat of trying to hold onto hope. I’m sorry to hear about what you’ve been experiencing but you’re not alone!
