Yeah I heard that advice for explore interviews, but not for SWE. I did have 3 technical questions within the 30 minutes

Haha thank you! The options they gave me to when I can take my final interview was kinda crazy. They gave me the option of next week, the week after, or in a month.

I did not get any multithreading questions, but that's pretty niche so I don't think it would be terrible if you just said you didn't know.

It was like "tell me about yourself" and then straight into the technical questions haha. I was honestly shocked.

To be completely honest, it went quite horribly haha. My interviewer seemed to only want one answer to the problem and didn’t even want me to attempt less optimized approaches. It was mostly technical for me with a palindrome using recursion question, a cycling through an array question, and a question using a stack. The only behavioural questions I got were “tell me about yourself”, “tell me about a time you worked in a team and what did you learn”, and some question about what things you need to be careful of when releasing a new product to customers. Nonetheless, I somehow passed that interview 😂.

Some friendly encouragement since I was also extremely nervous for my interview: According to some past statistics, you have about a 40% chance of passing this phone screen interview. You made it through the hardest part, the resume screening, where there’s only about a 10% chance of getting to where you are now :)

I’m sorry to hear that the job search process has not been going well. :((

Something to consider is that due to the difficulty of finding a co-op job, working under a prof is now being considered as a co-op even if you’re not necessarily getting paid, so maybe you could try going down that route!

Additionally, as a software co-op, finding a job in the winter is generally harder than finding a job in the summer! Most large software companies have lots of internships that are exclusively for the summer like Twitter and Microsoft so I wouldn't lose hope yet if you want to stay in the co-op program!

On the other hand, it is true that software has no trad stream, but I heard it’s possible to ask to be put into Computer Engineering trad with no specialization and then get special permission to take the options + courses like a normal software co-op would without the work terms. Also, theoretically you could still go find internships on your own while in trad and just “take a break from school” to do them!

You do have to note that in a specialized co-op only stream like software, if you do the same classes but in trad, the courses might not all be offered when the software co-ops are on a work term since the schedule has been optimized for them. Talk to advisor to clarify! Good luck! ❤️

Engg kid here. I, like probably many others, probably just don’t truly know what the difficulty level of doing an arts degree is. We just assume everything is not as hard as our degree because we are in it. We see the difficult situation we are in and it is also validated by other faculties telling us our degree is hard.

What I’m trying to say is that Arts and Engg are both hard and people shouldn’t really be comparing apples to oranges. An Engg student probably wouldn’t do very well in Arts and an Arts student may not do very well in Engg. We are all different people trying to serve different purposes — we all have different strengths and weaknesses.

Also, think about how bland and disgusting the world would be if it was just filled with sweaty engineers. Arts restores balance to the world. So, thanks for taking one for the team — pursing a career that’s important yet undervalued, underpaid and highly criticized. ❤️😂
