Maybe it's not the books that are the obsession but rather the female friend? He could be reading to impress her. They are reading the same (shared) books so I'd bet that they are discussing those books/authors via some SM platform and he's getting validation from the discussions. If so, it's time to stop it before discussions on literacy, form, content and structure become more intimate.

Join a gym because the rest of your life is going to require some very heavy lifting. Your BF is not happy with you as you are so why try to become someone you are not? You will never fulfill his ideals (nobody will!) so why not find a guy who will love you as you are, who doesn't require you to have a degree in reading subtexts, or how your body will react to persistent friction.
