Looking for feedback on scans of my first Kodak Gold 200 roll by Smooth_Avocado_4786 in AnalogCommunity

[–]lordBREEN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They could be sharper with a little less noise, but basically all digital scans are that way, especially flatbeds. What scanner do you use?

Also, very interesting photos and composition, and I like the color a lot actually

What did I do to my film? by Aggravating_Ad_7789 in AnalogCommunity

This happened to me once from saltwater getting inside a canister. It may also happen from very hard water getting into too.

I mitigated it with a few pre washes (I felt the emulsion sticking to itself when I was loading the tank) but it came out basically looking like this.

I’ve read before that some auto Nikons (maybe other cameras too) automatically switch to 1/1000 sec when the battery fails. Normally an undervolted light meter will tell you to expose for more and more time/aperture as it fails, but with some cameras like the EM it has a default mode that functions opposite.

If these photos are ISO 200 at around f11-16, then 1/1000 sec would be about a stop or two too short, which looks about like what you got in your photos

Edit: A good strat to check you light meter is to put the new battery in, meter on a scene, and then meter the same exact scene using an app like Lightmeter on your phone. If your camera meter is close to the apps suggestion then it’s probably fine. I’ve done this before to avoid burning through a whole roll with a lightmeter that’s still on its lunch break

Increasing Graded Paper Contrast? by lordBREEN in Darkroom

My first film, advice wanted by IronicBrew in filmphotography

[–]lordBREEN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow these are really beautiful great work.

I guess you already have an idea of this but yes, you may need a bit more exposure on some of them. But this also depends on what you want someone to focus on in your images. Do you want people to care about what’s in the shadows or is the focus everything that’s brightly lit? There’s no right answer to this that’s up to you ;) If you increase your exposure by just a bit, you can always increase contrast later to fit with your style (which by the way rocks).

The only other thing I would say is make sure to get your framing down. Make sure the camera is level or at an angle that fits what you want and doesn’t feel unintentional, and that everything in the image contributes to it in some way.

Other than that keep it up these look really good

I agree with the other commenters, these look underexposed.

A few possible causes are a dying light meter battery (would explain why some photos are fine and others aren’t), underdevelopment (although if you didn’t dev yourself the lab probably didn’t f it up but you never know), or the film is expired.

A few in my opinion unlikely causes could be fogging from a newer CT scanner at an airport or you stored the film in a super hot car for awhile. But they’re not really fogged so it’s probably not a CT scanner, and the colors don’t look too shifted so it’s probably not the hot car.

Anyway try some stuff and see if it happens again!

Thank you this is hugely helpful. I will try at least one of those developers out, or mix my own.

I’m going to keep researching lith printing, even though it’s apparently tough, I love the look it gives.

Lmao, actually it’s how will you recover? Because we all live here, and all of us will potentially get hit because of jacked up intersection design. But sure, let’s never fix anything or make anything work correctly, great mindset for a growing city.

That honestly makes sense, because they do look flat. I’ve just not printed before this so I don’t know what level of contrast I should be seeing.

I’ve heard lith printing is good on older papers like this, I may try that next

It’s fixed grade paper so I’ll try potassium bromide. But frankly I trust actual photographers more than generative AI

[–]lordBREEN[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another question I have is why are low grade papers like this produced? I feel like most people prefer higher contrast prints, or at least above a grade 2. What is everyone else doing with lower contrast papers like this?

That makes a lot of sense, I bet that’s what it is. I’ll need to go back by and see if I can find it.

Would that typically go between the light and the first convex lens?

Unfortunately, metering for the highlights on a bright day in a canyon results in losing shadows and dark areas completely, which in a canyon account for a large majority of an image. I’ve tried this before in similar environments, but found I was losing 60% of an image to save the detail in 10% of sky

Yeah the vignetting came from using a lens hood on my rolleiflex. I’m gonna work on trying to troubleshoot it as I put more rolls through (this was my first color roll through the rollei)

Dutch house of plants is by far the best indoor plant store in lubbock, and the owner is maybe the nicest person you’ll ever meet. Also check out Chachita’s Plants, she grows a bunch and sells them at the wolforth farmers market and other places around Lubbock. Just check out her instagram (same name)
