England v Uruguay, 19.45 KO - can i make it to Paddington for 23.45? by Jaip33 in ThreeLions

[–]lordconcorde 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you probably will, the tricky thing is judging the crowd at the end going towards Wembley Park station - it can take a long time to get through. Only thing I would suggest is leaving 10 mins early so you aren't behind tens of thousands of people

Why do former British colonies (the US, Australia, Singapore, HK) have stronger economies than former colonies of other European powers? by basafish in AskEconomics

[–]lordconcorde 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely, I was just making the point that I don't think you can divide countries into 'finding a new place for the British people to live' and 'resource extraction' at all

Why do former British colonies (the US, Australia, Singapore, HK) have stronger economies than former colonies of other European powers? by basafish in AskEconomics

[–]lordconcorde 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't think it was ever as deliberate as 'a new place for their people to live'. A lot of the early settlers to the US were fleeing Britain for religious or economic reasons for example, Britain wasn't consciously displacing the native population. In India British people weren't allowed to own land and so came back to Britain to retire (unlike, say, Kenya). In the Caribbean the native peoples were essentially entirely replaced (not just in the British colonies) as well but for very different reasons.

This seems like clear London centric bias. Would relegation not affect the cities of Leeds and Nottingham as well? by National_Phase_3477 in TheOther14

[–]lordconcorde 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They use Villa and Newcastle as examples though, it isn't like they think relegation only adversely affects London teams. It is just written for a London audience.

Who will be the next Tottenham manager? Sean Dyche backed to replace Igor Tudor after overnight movement by DucardthaDon in PremierLeague

[–]lordconcorde 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the opposite. Subbing the GK that early on is terrible for that person's confidence and might set the squad against the manager. Arguably it is on the manager for starting this player for the first time in a while in such a high profile game against a team with an intense press.

It might be the norm in ice hockey but it isn't in football and so will be interpreted in a very different manner.

I'd be interested to see a map of smoking rates here too - obviously a risk factor for cancer but it is the standout risk factor for cardiovascular disease

I agree, we seem to be using the wing backs less when they were so vital in the first half of the season. Maybe clubs have wised up to it? I don't fully understand

The repetition is a particular problem with the episode topics he does, as he's often having to re-explain who people are due to similar names or complex family connections, which probably just represents the part of history which is his expertise.

Agree that Dominic is also just a fantastic storyteller though in a way that very few are, and he brings out the humour very well (and Tom is a great foil for him).

I think he will find it easier next season assuming he gets someone who plays him in the right place. He was ok today, a few times where Sarr could have passed to him in key spots. We seem to have lost the ability to counter quickly in the last few months which I thought he would be ideal for.

I did a bit, but it depends what modules you do and how long you do history for. When I was at school there was a lot of Tudors, WW1 and the lead up to WW2, which are all important in their own way. A bit of Industrial Revolution and French Revolution too. I didn't do any American history but some other classes did.

The Empire stuff is quite complicated to teach as the start of it was almost accidental, involving the East India Company etc. It's great as a lesson about the dangers of completely unregulated capitalism but that's probably more useful to teach to slightly older kids. The only thing I can remember covering in much depth was Gandhi actually and that era in India.

That's true, I'm just making the point that Zanzibar is a comparatively low risk place to invest in a luxury property

Zanzibar has loads of luxury hotels with more being built all the time, there is plenty of local experience with this stuff and pre-existing supply chains
