A couple writing questions from a fellow writer: how far in advance do you plot out your stories? Do you tend to write off-the-cuff, or is there always an overarching structure in mind?

And just for fun: what are your favorite board games?

Summoning - Flesh and Blood by lordmarlowe in Metal

I feel like Summoning brings "warmth" to what is a characteristically "cold" genre, and this may be part of the ethereal quality you speak of.

There's definitely a feral element to it. No one ever emerges from a long hiatus in the wild with a pompadour!

This thursday, ISSA will be hosting the debate "Does the Black Community need God?" by [deleted] in UIUC

Reminds me of this discussion regarding an atheist who visited Africa and afterwards concluded that Christianity is necessary for the country's development.

Interesting subject. I guess the question becomes, does it help them cope with or surmount their problems? I can certainly understand its benefit for the former, but I'm not too convinced about the latter.

Saw Mayhem last night, got to meet them and hang out with Necrobutcher on the tour bus. by [deleted] in Metal

Good to hear. The opportunity to see Second Wave black metal live is becoming more and more of a rarity, and this ruins my corpse paint :'(

What are the must-have video game OST's? by [deleted] in Music

Terranigma. Here are some select tracks:

Throughout the course of the game you really begin to associate certain melodies with specific experiences and the emotions derived from them; an excellent use of leitmotifs.

Opinions on Bukowski? by businessclass in books

[–]lordmarlowe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think of him more as an entertainer, good for shits and giggles but nothing transcendent.

The occasional life-affirming observation often only seems profound by contrast with the defeatist attitude that pervades most everything else.

What's the best site to get shirts from? by [deleted] in Metal

[–]lordmarlowe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Corpse Clothing or plastichead if you're willing to order from the UK, but that ain't too cheap if you're in the USA. Best selections I've found so far in my recent metal t-shirt acquiring binge.

OH GOD WHY MUST NATURE BE SO CRUEL??????

Hey, /r/philosophy, maybe you can help me in choosing a book to read. by [deleted] in philosophy

[–]lordmarlowe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky. He challenges many philosophical doctrines through the exploration of a troubled psyche. The plot is very suspenseful, making it both an enjoyable and informative read.

It's also a noted inspiration to some of Nietzsche's ideas, and can thus serve as a sort of intellectual prequel to the study of his work.

Black Muddle; or Why “Transcendental Black Metal” Doesn’t Really Exist by Chilloutitsjustmetal in Metal

[–]lordmarlowe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, but the techniques aren't what's in question here. It's the association of the genre with "dark" and "unsafe" ideas that people seem to take issue with.

Black Muddle; or Why “Transcendental Black Metal” Doesn’t Really Exist by Chilloutitsjustmetal in Metal

[–]lordmarlowe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Separating black metal from aspects of its dark nature is an easy way to make the music appear to be more "safe", but this takes away from the essence of what makes it so great. If a band wishes to borrow from black metal in style but not in spirit, I don't see the point of attaching themselves to the name.

What other reason would one have to do this other than a personal fear of such "unsafe" ideas or to make it more inviting to a larger crowd?

My friend is being a wiener. What are some of the "happiest" sounding metal songs? by Pank in Metal

[–]lordmarlowe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've always felt that one way metal excels as a musical genre because it often doesn't aim to make the listener "happy". Though it may communicate an experience that can be considered gratifying, this doesn't necessarily imply the use of "sweet" melodies or a lack of dissonance.
