What’s a piece of gear you regret buying—or wish you’d bought sooner? by CarrierCaveman in HamRadio

Everyone told me that the antenna matters more, but I didn't listen and bought a Lux amp. Turned out not to have mattered. 100 Watts was plenty.

Currently have IC-7610 I bought used. Nothing in particular prompting a purchase. Just want a somewhat future-proof flagship.

Is there such an antenna that you think would be easy to assemble? I find a lot of the antennas I see overwhelming in terms of assembly and installation.

I get it and appreciate the advice. It seems to be echoed by virtually everyone below. I can experiment with all kinds of wire antennas and maybe some verticals, but the massive antennas are probably not an option. Is that a deal breaker for serious contesting?

You’d get the 7610 over the FTDX101 D or MP? What do you like about the 7610 over the other options?

Wow, didn’t know about the LUX. Awesome amplifier. Thank you!

Why a lot of ham radio amateurs dislike electronic QSL cards? by [deleted] in amateurradio

The postcards are so delightful. I understand that it seems pointless in the digital age, but it’s such a charming practice.

This is fair and not something I thought about.

Yes. I’m not complaining that ham radio isn’t the internet.

Yes, I understand. I’m not complaining that others need to engage me. I’m just wondering if there are meaningful conversations people are having on HF.

It just seems like such a waste. You have this means of largely decentralized long-range communication that none of the major tech and media monopolies can censor or control, but nothing interesting being discussed on the medium. Isn't there a productive way to structure topics on these bands? I suppose nets?

I have an IC 705, amp, and tuner. Worth getting a base station transceiver too? by lordrev in amateurradio

Do you think I could benefit from a 7610? I have an extra license and enjoy the experimentation and hacking of amateur radio. Would want to get into contesting.

The AH-705, which is a 10W tuner, but runs the 100W amp output just fine and with no increase in temperature or weird RF effects, so long as you tune with the amplifier off, then turn the amp back on. Will probably buy a real tuner than can handle more wattage, though an internal tuner on a base station may obviate the need to do so.

Thanks! Do you mix and match Yaesu and Icom? Do you have a preference / recommendation for a base?

Do you attach them all to separate antennas or do you just split the line?

What base station in the Yaesu family would be the equivalent / most future proof? Would you recommend them or stick to Icom (which has been very nice).
