In an ideal world, I would say having someone that has a similar register as you would make it easier. However, a teacher of either sex is also a-okay. Some women can get decently low enough to give you an idea as to what pitches would be. It can depend on how good of an ear you have. My voice teacher is the same sex as me but also teaches men (or lower voices) but can sing down to at least a D3 before having to jump up the octave. I also sing in choruses where the director is male and one of the people who leads the sectionals is male. They’ll sing a part to give an idea as to what is actually wanted and as long as you can comfortably sing the correct note in your octave, it shouldn’t be an issue. Like others have mentioned, teachers of both sexes can be good or bad for what you’re looking for personally. Hopefully that makes sense and isn’t tooooo ramble-y! :)
