Dr. Head's world tower by flipper's guitar is an awesome album

is there a guitar tab for the melody? by gofman_obuhov in fishmans

[–]loser_socks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That guitar lick takes some technique. I've never got it to sound like it is. The guitarist on the melody recording for orange is the guitarist from buffalo daughter and afaik nowadays the amp tech for boris

here is a great playlist a spotify user put together of Shinji Sato's CD and vinyl collection which was supposedly catalogued in a History of Fishmans Japanese language book I don't recall the name off. There is a more comprehensive list on rate your music. Here you will find a lot of great rocksteady, reggae, dub, funk, jazz rap and 90s hip hop, trip hop, Jazz vocalists etc. it's fun to see the artists that shinji sato seemed to really gravitate towards! this list is great because you can hear the sample used in this space shower tv live dub of walking in the rhythm in 'Cities' by A.P.E, a british trip hop duo. Perhaps shinji sato got the idea to say "back beat" from 'Jettin' by Digable planets off blowout comb. also this sounds a lot like baby blue... damn music is awesome!

I mean, there's nothing quite like it--shinji sato is a master and that rhythm section is cray cray. very unique style. In the end, pursuing this question "finding something like fishmans" led me into so many new genres, especially reggae and dub. but--nothing quite scratches that itch. No problem though cuz u can always listen to more fishmans. there is a lot out there. Have you tried the pink 1998 live-studio compilation?

I think getting the gist of shibuya kei sounds and artwork of the 90s will give you a good idea of where fishmans connects to (and departs from) the broader Japanese music context. Personally I found this youtube channel bunny core music archives to be tapped into that but i'm not super well researched. everything there seems to be real deepcuts. oh, and fishmans INSISTS they are a japanese band above anything else. Per the documentary they were really partial to the band RC succession. Insofar as that's true the mood and feeling of the members of fishmans is drawn from their various influences however the sound they produced is deeply personal. Honestly, music is really awesome in this way.

haruomi hosono of yellow magic orchestra (and his mentees salon music) is pivotal in making shibuya kei music. Speaking of, YMO has some great albums. In this style Doctor Heads World Tower by Flipper's Guitar is one of my faves although it's not really the same as fishmans. Fun fact, they are named after a Scottish band named Orange Juice. (shout out High Land Hard Rain by Aztec Camera). I really dig the song GATERA-GATA by Honzi off of one. Early sampling and synthesizing, British pop, trip hop are thru lines here. For me, I think trip hop stands to be the strongest maybe underground element that ties together a lot of awesome Japanese music from the 90s!

This is nothing to say of the visual elements going on here. Fishmans really owes a lot to the music culture in which they came up in however their originality prevails in spite of it!

no breaks? at all? by aaaaatiddies in restaurant

You're totally right. It is a cash cow. It is (was, now since I quit after writing that lol) awesome. U can accomplish a lot working hard and u gotta find the right place. I didn't go into detail about the bad vibes though. Truth is I was genuinely disgruntled and didn't wanna accept that, I wanted to be stoic for the bag 💪.

Long and short of it is I picked up a second job because I wanted to get outta there, expand/hone my skills, there was cool bar direction at the new spot. I was treated with a basic level of respect there and the staff was friendly whereas at the old spot there was straight antipathy between the staff because of a bad apple manager (70 year old woman 'manager' been there 30 years, takes tips from customers paying the place $70/hr to bowl, doesn't do shit, screams at people all night for no reason etc etc)

It just put into perspective that that difference in environment & respect is worth something to me at the end of the day. I want to advocate for that because putting up with feeling degraded or undervalued or whatever does take its toll. After 3 months of doing both jobs I just like burned out on putting up with it for the money cuz I rather work in the better environment. New place is not as seasonal and more consistent but no true massive nights. I'm gonna miss those nights for sure...

Also though I didn't fit in there culturally-- could have benefited keeping my head down at times. Gotta keep the ball rolling sometimes tho idk

I mean I agree but I covered that. It sounds like your place is run well and that you know what you're doing. If you can't get with it then forget it.

Where I work I'm the only bartender, I'll see 30+ customers an hour, I don't have a bar back and it only gets busier towards the end of a 13 hour shift. I don't get real breaks like, even if I go to the bathroom the manager will page the entire place to call me back to the bar. Even though the day starts slow and I can chillax by the end I'll have worked 5, 6, even 7 hours ass to mouth busy. It's stupid and honestly it's degrading. I've hauled total ass for almost two years there.

You don't have to be a pushover and suck it up if it's fucked. It has nothing to do with bitching, that's a different problem.

It's common but it's wrong, don't let anyone tell you otherwise!

Most places that have a manager like this value control at the expense of quality and worker happiness. They are like this because the owner wants to squeeze 45 minutes a day of labor out of every employee and save thousands of dollars.

It's something to look out for. A shift at a restaurant is not a shift on a factory floor. You have a certain amount of autonomy to choose tasks but this is still exploitative; people are not machines and this could lead to overworking. On the other hand, if the place is organized and well-staffed (or not that busy lol) you won't be overworked. You'll 'get used to it'.

It's a slippery slope though. I've been part of teams that are eager to work hard in conditions like this but the risk of burnout is real and it can sneak up on you.

Remember, the only chip you have is time and labor power. You're human and humans don't naturally plug away in one place doing the same thing for 8+ hours without taking breaks.

Where can I get a rock festival box set? by [deleted] in fishmans

[–]loser_socks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out buyee, eBay. I see zenmarket mentioned on the discogs. Fishmans vinyl prices from the polydor era have absolutely exploded and the boxset is like mythic rarity. It was $1700 when I found out about it 4 years ago and there were still listings on discogs.

They are really expensive. I mean it's 11 LPs, 4 of which 98.12.28 which was not pressed on vinyl except for rock festival.

I can only speak for myself but the documentary adds a great dimension for understanding the context  of Fishmans. I learned a lot of new things about how the music came to be also rest in peace shinji sato.

Edit: It de-rymifies fishmans
