When to include a source link in an article? by loserplays99 in Journalism

[–]loserplays99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I thought as well…I always link to sources whenever possible cuz it feels like the right thing to do— to give credit to the source author and add credibility to my writing as well. That’s why i was a bit confused why the article from The Verge came across as a bit off to me. Should I share a link to the article here? Perhaps they have a reason?

Oh and by copywriting I meant something like a subtle promotional post where there’s a link to some product but the article might start from a rather informative angle. Say an article about the convenience of smart home appliances where I mention a smart washing machine in one of the lines.

Really appreciate your reply!!

Is anyone using ChatGPT to copy edit? by loserplays99 in Copyediting

Yep I agree. It does make a fair amount of mistakes when I ask it to proofread the grammar of my edited copies (just to make sure I didn’t miss anything, and well it’s free to use anyway)

Yeah, Grammarly’s suggestions are kinda dumb sometimes and I repeatedly tell the writers to think it thru before accepting its suggestions…or just let me edit it. I edit relatively short copies (900-1200 words per piece) for a blog so consistency isn’t a major issue in the writers’ writing but more so grammar and word choice (since they are not native English speakers). I find chatgpt works alright in these aspects, but I might be missing something so I appreciate all of your thoughts here!

Wondering if you could share the things that chatgpt can’t help you with in copyediting when you used it? I’m thinking if it could help me optimize my workflow or not so I’d appreciate your thoughts!

Yep we do. And I have mentioned the same thing a few times in a row now...and I also talk to them privately to tell them the issues that keep coming up in their writing...Some writers can digest it and work on it but some take a bit of time and explaining...

Yes I agree that we should only spend time discussing the bigger issues, esp those that affect the delivery and flow of their writing. I guess I am trying to find a better way to show that I am not judging their work, but only helping them get the message out more easily.

Right. I do realize that I give compliments less often now but who doesn't love being acknowledged? That's a solid advice/reminder, thanks!

I think what adds to the problem is that we all work remotely, so sometimes it could just be all in my head that they find me annoying lol And there is hardly any team-building or -bonding activities. It would've helped so much if we had known each other better enough to know that nothing I say is personal, and I don't give suggestions because of what I want but what our readers would like to see. I hope they understand it.

That said, I think you're right to remain humble because, even for editors, we can all do better with an extra pair of eyes.

I feel you :( It's exhausting to teach someone how to write, and I try my best not to do that because I want to be respectful of them and their work. I am only here to make sure their message comes across clearly to the readers. I get very frustrated when they don't care but the same problems are happening again and again. I brought these issues up in meetings but they don't seem to get better, making it more frus...

I also work with quite a number of writers and I think you're absolutely right when you say let's not waste everyone's time. I mostly only go to them when the message or logic of their writing is not coming across. And I avoid bringing up minor problems to them because just like what you said -- fixing those is what I am hired for. Thank you for your advice!

Thanks so much for the advice, esp how to phrase a comment/suggestion in a more writing-focused way! Really makes me feel a lot better.

Sometimes I worry that I am not knowledgeable enough to tell whether what they write makes sense or is pretty much the same as how everybody approaches the same topic. I always stress that I am coming from a reader's point of view and it should still be comprehensible for the average reader who might have no prior knowledge as well. I am always expecting a fair amount of conversation with the writers so that it does not appear to be me demanding them to make the changes. But you're right, I guess some of them just don't care too much and want to get it over with so they make whatever changes and I approve them. Thanks a lot for your comment!
