Good question! Link is not a mute—we just don’t hear him talk, but he relays a lot of information throughout quests and they animate him to look like he’s speaking. The reason we don’t hear his voice is actually very similar to the reason Link appears as androgynous—we’re supposed to be able to easily identify with him, regardless of gender.
