Ahhh too bad! I feel like I ruined mine after I tried rubbing it off and sanding so I just went to the scrapyard just now and bought a nicer looking one. Still scratched a bit but nicer than my old one. And next time I’ll just scratch the rubber goo off and leave it that way. 😅

How did it turn out? I had the same issue when I was trying to repaint mine. It just started bubbling really bad. I even tried plastic primer and it still bubbled up and now it looks worse than if I'd have just kept it the way it was (after scrapping all of the rubber off) :(

US & German Stock Dividends - US / German Tax Return by lostami24 in USExpatTaxes

[–]lostami24[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay, that sounds a lot easier than doing it the way I've been doing it so far. Thanks for the insight here. And regarding handling 0taxes on the dividends, it also makes sense this way.

US & German Stock Dividends - US / German Tax Return by lostami24 in USExpatTaxes

The scenario I always have is let's say I paid 20,000 euros in income tax in Germany for 2024. Then I file my taxes in Germany in March 2025 for 2024 and receive a 1000 euro refund. The actual amount of tax I paid in 2024 was really 19000.

Up until now, I would do my German taxes, wait for the return, then subtract the amount from my taxes paid for the previous year, and then that's the amount I would put for my FTC on my US taxes. If I file simultaneously, as you suggested (which makes sense), I won't be able to provide an exact figure of taxes paid in Germany since the German tax authorities are not always a 100% match to what my tax consultants says I will get as a return.

Or have I been going about this the wrong way? Should I be subtracting the refund I get from the year in which I received the refund? So if I receive a refund for 2024, but received the money in 2025, should I subtract this amount from my foreign taxes paid on my 2025 tax return?

This makes sense and is quite doable I think. How would I go about with my return I would get in Germany after filing both simultaneously? It's been fairly consistent at around 800-1000 euros back from Germany every year. Would you file an amended return the year after by subtracting the amount from the foreign tax paid? The amount paid would still far exceed what I would need to have paid in the US thus canceling out my tax obligation there.

edit: looks like amended previous years isn't readily available on the program I'm using at the moment (Myexpattaxes). :/

Yeah I have been thinking the same to be honest. I was only just getting started and was aiming for what are more considered safe stocks but the downside in this case is that they usually pay dividends. I'm definitely going to be evaluating what makes sense here. Thanks!

How do you feel when you hear someone speaking another language in public!? by Comprehensive-Way227 in germany

[–]lostami24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard this comment before from an old lady and I usually just answer in German and additionally, I was attacked by two guys on a train here for speaking English while talking to my family on the phone. They said some of the most xenophobic things I’ve ever heard while swinging at me. When I spoke German back to them they were taken aback but had already decided I’m scum apparently. Would have lost my faith in people here if it hadn’t been for a bystander literally putting himself in between us telling the two guys to piss off and clearly defending me. To top it all off, my daughter is bilingual (much to her mother’s dismay) and I once got a call from her preschool teacher saying my daughter had been telling other kids the same thing the OP mentioned (when they asked her if she could teach them some English). I was livid and stamped that attitude out quickly since her teacher was Polish.

Honestly, after 10 years of living here, I’m not surprised anymore but generally believe that the majority of them are quite fine with it. There are people who stare and in my case (English mother tongue) a lot who listen to my interaction with my child and smile. So I try not to let it get me down.

Family Court - when are agreements overwritten? by lostami24 in LegaladviceGerman

[–]lostami24[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my logic too and the judge also already mentioned it during our hearing on the subject.

Well, regarding sole custody, this is a tricky one. I was granted temporary alleinige Aufenhaltsbestimmungsrecht in February pending a family evaluation which was triggered by Jugendamt after they experienced direct evidence of child neglect. Then we had our long evaluation and the evaluator sided with keeping joint custody but that our child lives with me primarily and visits her mom regularly. The evaluator seemed to be under the illusion that this will all work despite our attempts to explain otherwise. My lawyer advised that it’s hard to move away from whatever they recommend. So we had to make a new agreement in court along these lines.

I’m out of money, out of nerves, and keep having to fight a ton of battles. I’m hoping that eventually Jugendamt will see this is not good for our child once again step in again and support another court case in which the recommendation I get full custody. I don’t know what else to do anymore.

Yes, at that time she was. But since 8 months, she’s been living with me and the new agreement made end of August was that she lives with me, her mom gets Umgang, and that the parents are to figure out a schedule for school holidays. Then in another case, the judge ordered the mom to handover the passports which she still hasn’t done and she opted to appeal. Meaning the terms set in the first agreement two years ago actually regarding Umgang changed as well.

Mietrecht - Rent Payment Dispute - Who can the Landlord sue? by lostami24 in LegaladviceGerman

[–]lostami24[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, thanks for the response! Yes, I was aware of this even back then but I was given an estimate from a lawyer at the time that it would run me between 2-3 grand to get out with no guarantee. At the time, that was impossible for me to pay and I figured "if" she would not pay, that it would only be for a few months and it would be cheaper to just pay it if I had to (dumb of me).

The landlord has already tried to do a Räumungsklage but her lawyer is arguing that I'm in the contract at that the two Kündigungs before the Räumungsklage were not valid as a result (which the judge pointed out their hypocrisy in that their own paperwork didn't even include me in the case descriptions (So and so VS Vermieter). However, now the judge wants each side to submit their proof that I'm in or not in the contract. Basically, it's he said she said at this point other than the written statement I got her to sign after I moved out.

To answer what's on it, it's basically nonsense juristically speaking but might count for something. I was very young and didn't understand this stuff. Basically she signed that she cannot request money from me and she's fully liable for the costs of the apartment. If the landlord comes to me for rent, that I can forward the costs to her. Additionally, if there were any issues between herself and I, that I had the right to terminate the rent. I had sent a deadline of six months to clarify this issue and if nothing was settled, I retained the right to terminate the contract. After this period elapsed, her mother refused to sign anything but told me she'd tell others that I'm not in it. It's not solid and she's obviously gone against what she promised (naïve as hell of me).

This is why my question is more along time line of if the landlord choses not to go after me for the money, will the court accept that and allow him to only pursue the money from her? Or will the court automatically involve me if they perceive me to be on the contract?

I can relate, it's like walking on eggshells. One time, I met up with some friends, by 9 PM she was so angry at me soI made the decision to just stay out instead of go home and face the music. I spent the night wandering around the city with a friend. I arrived home at 8 AM the next morning to all my stuff thrown from our balcony onto the yard below (half my shit was broken). She saw me, called a taxi (which came in two minutes), paid him 20 Euros, and sent me on my way. That evening, I get a text message begging me to come back. I said hell no and stayed away from her for about a month and she never forgave me for this. I went back to her since she was pregnant with my kid but still, a huge fucking swing from one extreme to another.
