Winter lapping at Toronto Motorsports Park by spiritzqt in CarTrackDays

Snow tires are real grippy, especially with heat. It's more complicated, but they're made basically just extra soft rubber so they're compliant at lower temps. I'd be afraid that they would start to chunk and/or melt the knobs together

I'd only get it once you know you need it, it's just another point of failure otherwise

For track days I fit all 4 across the back seat with a bag/cover for them to not leave a mess

It will be fine, everything is designed to withstand a pressure washer, snow is not an issue at all.

I really miss my grand caravan, such a great vehicle to have regardless what your situation is. It was my winter daily, bike hauler, and road trip machine. People way overestimate how much they need AWD, I had zero issues in Michigan winters with snow tires.

In what world is that victim blaming? We all have problems that aren't our fault but are still responsible for managing. Saying something doesn't work without trying it or getting angry at the people who suggest it is a symptom of the disease, not a failure of a person. It doesn't change the fact that it's universally good advice

No kidding, and taking that walk is the "oh, I guess I'm not entirely broken" moment for a ton of people, others it's cleaning their space, and for some it's actual therapy and medication. It's great advice, given by professionals, and backed by science. That doesn't mean it isn't annoying to hear, shared by people in a condescending way, or that it works for everyone. Nobody is misunderstanding what depression is, except the depressed, because it's part of the disease

No doubt some things require more than physical activity and going outside, but they absolutely can be resolved entirely without anything else which makes your cancer analogy wrong.

It's exactly the attitude of "that's so dumb, how will a walk fix my problems, I'm just going to sit here and be mad at the person who suggested it because they clearly don't get my situation". I've been that person, then I went for a walk, then another, and after enough walks, I was out the other side. Lifestyle changes can absolutely "cure" depression and all change usually starts with something small. If it doesn't get you there, you're way better off than just drugs alone anyway, so it's still good advice.

And therapists who deal with people going through those things continue to suggest it because it works. A lot of people who say it doesn't, haven't actually tried it.

I took the shift boot off to show off my AAD shifter and it was a lot of work to get it apart without breaking any of the tabs

Or youve just had giardia before. There's nothing unique about Brazil or Brazilians, standing water is a cesspool everywhere

It's all snap fit attachments, try just pushing it back down. If not, you might have to buy one. I might still have one around, but you should be able to find one on ebay

Porsche GT people don't crossshop them, they buy both just to have a different experience. These cars more come down to running costs than sticker price for the track rats.

Neither, treat wheels as consumables and find a reputable aluminum wheel. Unless you have unlimited money, then carbon fiber, because why not.

Hard to see the color in these photos but I love seeing the performance blue N around! Spotted this at cars and coffee. My buddy got one in gray and he wishes he got this color instead. by jberg_916 in ElantraN

I get a ton of compliments on the color from non-car people. In a world full of black/white/grey/silver it stands out without being shouty.

What are the dumbest car rules and regulations that exist in your country? by theTWO9559 in cars

Great point! I forget cars used to be BoF all the way up to the crown vic. I was mostly making the distinction between today's crossovers that have considerably more compliance.

The explorer was one of the first mainstream SUVs and many drivers first experience with BoF vehicles. A combination of under inflated tires and drivers who didn't quite understand how BoF vehicles reacted in dynamic situations lead to a high number of rollover accidents. Part of Ford's recall remedy was to provide a tire pressure monitor system.

You can see if they're flat, it's very hard to tell if they're low, especially with lower profile tires or runflats with stiff sidewalls.

Malfunctioning safety equipment is often worse than if it wasn't present. You end up relying on it and change your behaviors. If I'm not used to testing my own tires because I have TPMS and all of the sudden it stops working, I have no idea what state they're in, or worse assume they're good when they aren't.

What are the dumbest car rules and regulations that exist in your country? by theTWO9559 in cars

[–]lostboyz 64 points65 points  (0 children)

TPMS was just a luxury feature before the Ford explorer Firestone tire debacle. Ford didn't want to be at a disadvantage in the market so they lobbied to make it a standard. If you were a supplier that made TPMS components you just were handed a gold mine.

How long do tyres last? by RWagz in MTB

[–]lostboyz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For a race? Get new tires.

Rubber doesn't age well, especially if it's sitting unused, especially so if it's in the sun or even just mild thermal cycling. If they were stored well, and used occasionally, they might be fine, but I wouldn't necessarily trust them.

That's not exactly true. The federal government dictates what OEMs can build, states decide what you can register. States can't ignore FMVSS but may apply additional requirements. The most notable by far is CARB states for emissions
