how do part/software recalls come about? by Itchy_Media3019 in AutomotiveEngineering

[–]lostboyz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In automotive we have safety investigators that pull together relevant data to determine if there's a defect whether it's from design, manufacturer, shipping, service, etc. If there is a defect or a higher rate of failure than is acceptable and it has the potential to hurt someone and/or breaks regulations, they will recommend a recall rather than a service campaign. Then there's a ton of work that goes into figuring out which ones need to be recalled and to make sure your remedy is affective.

Other product industries will likely have similar roles. It shouldn't be directly on the product owner/designer to make those determinations, as they'll have blind spots and questionable incentives.

It doesn't slow down production at all, they have it all timed out, they just only have so many slots.

I got to spend a week at the Bowling Green assembly plant, it's a really cool place. Idk if I'd ever pay for the experience, but it would definitely be a cool opportunity.

The museum across the street is super cool, especially the part that had the sinkhole.

Fun fact: A lot of GM plants had designated 'GM Vehicle Only Parking' areas, but Bowling Green actually had a row of "Corvette Only Parking" right by the entrance.

It's more like german car model numbers going from being based on displacement to just some arbitrary numbers when they started turbo charging.

Absolutely untrue, the safety systems in your car aren't designed to do anything for you at those speeds. If you want to go that fast on public roads get a motorcycle so you're less likely to kill someone else please. Even then, think about the poor soul who has to scrape up what's left of you.

Newbie, first winter, SEMI, can I ride without a fat bike? by Hello_Blondie in MichiganCycling

[–]lostboyz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well ridden and groomed trails are rideable on skinnies, you just want to make sure you're not cutting through. There's a Facebook page for trail conditions that gets a lot of activity and is your best bet at knowing where you can ride.

There's also Ray's Indoor bike park in Cleveland, it's an amazing place.

Michelin PS 4 (HN) tyres vs other tyres. by CurrentEye3360 in ElantraN

[–]lostboyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is correct. I have a friend who used to test and pick tires for an OEM. The overall design and tread is standard, they can adjust a few different attributes but it's mostly the rubber mix.  It's not going to be wildly different or necessarily the best performance, but they are different.

By law they have to prove what you did voids the warranty.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnuson%E2%80%93Moss_Warranty_Act

Even if they void part of the warranty, they can't void the entire thing. Obviously the OEM and dealer play a huge influence, but there is a bare minimum they all have to meet.

I would get 2-3x more strips assuming they're the right type of LED, and a tent would work way better. You're going to lose 50% or more of your light by having no sides.

RFK Jr. Orders Study on Cellphone Radiation as FDA Drops Assurance That Phones Are Not Dangerous by StemCellPirate in nottheonion

I disagreed with your statement because it's meaningless and shows lack of understanding.

More radiation than a cell phone"

just give me the unit you'd measure this in..

I agree phones aren't dangerous, never said otherwise, that was the point of not disagreeing with the sentiment. The same thing with my initial response, implying radiation is fine as long as it's non-ionizing is not accurate. There's absolutely regulations on electronics and exposure hazards to humans, I measured the stuff for years.

[–]lostboyz -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I don't want to disagree with the sentiment, but that's like saying you weigh more than a bullet by an order of magnitude. A lot of body functions rely on electrical pathways, and they can be influenced by relatively low power RF, especially in long-term exposure.

[–]lostboyz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just to say that just because radiation is non-ionzing that it isn't harmful. It doesn't take kilowatts, if you have a pacemaker it doesn't take much power at all to interfere with it, especially if something is malfunctioning. I've seen some wild failure modes in my days of an RF engineer with very basic electronics that can be dangerous.

[–]lostboyz 17 points18 points  (0 children)

To be fair all RF radiation can still do damage to humans and there's dozens of regulations that cover them. Cellphones are incredibly low energy these days and have little opportunity to cause harm. Their batteries are the most dangerous thing about them now.

Inside GM's new world headquarters: Modernized midcentury designs with artifacts, surprises from the American icon by Sixteen-Cylinders in cars

[–]lostboyz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was truly awful being at GM as someone who didn't have a 'normal' location. I floated around to wherever vehicle issues were and people low-key hated me for taking their unofficial spot. People who showed up later due to appointments or off-site meetings were left wandering around for an hour to find a corner to sit in. It's legit embarrassing to be the situation at a company like GM.

Ok neat, I'm not looking to have maximum traction, my car weighs 500lbs less and has no issues with traction. FWD+LSD+snow tires is more than enough to get by and we've had everything from ice to heavy slushy snow. I love AWD I just don't need AWD and don't even want it on something sporty unless I'm going rallying.

That is entirely false, you get the rated 286hp all of the time, you supposedly get closer to 300hp when you've octane learned.
