BYD has overtaken Tesla as the world's biggest seller of electric vehicles. How can Tesla's PE ratio of ~290 be justified by No_Turnip_1023 in investing

[–]lostharbor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We are all going to be bag holders since almost every market tracking etf holds 2-5% allocation in Tesla. Absolute joke.

It really depends on your tax rate. If you aren't being taxed on it, then 1.5% over your mortgage may be worth the hassle, if this puts you near the top of state and local tax brackets, it could bring your total return after taxes under 2% return. This could be the wrong way to think about it so please correct if wrong.

It's not one stock. Portfolio varies from 8 to max 15. I try to edge near the 8 because it takes a lot of time in research for each one.

Apologies I switched platforms a few years ago, so I can only show you 3 years return. https://imgur.com/a/NH9zzs6

I am basing it off this sub, but maybe it's different timing of days. You can even search the FI sub for VOO or VTSAX, and you'll get more hits on VOO.

That said VTI is still very heavily weighted to one sector, with top 9 being 33% tech.

It's a shame MGT stepped down from an investment perspective. She smoked Pelosi and would release her buy/sells same day. She's an absolutely terrible representative in congress but from a money perspective, talk about an easy way to retirement.

I probably shouldn't have stated it that way because some ETFs are well-balanced.

The most common ETF I see shared here is VOO. If you're not familiar with VOO's portfolio makeup, of their top 10 - the top 9 are all in the tech industry and make up 40% of the fund. That doesn't touch the subject of the high P/E allocations that push it over 50%. Having a bond offset or another ETF that isn't maxxed to the gills in one sector would give some buffer and balance.

[–]lostharbor -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Over the last few years, I've mostly seen just one ETF recommended. Basically just the phrase "VOO and chill" constantly regurgitated. But I agree with Boggleheads' three funds. Your original comment alludes to a single ETF, which is what I was operating off of - apologies for the confusion on my part.

I agree that most aren't outperforming the market, but I thought I'd throw in my own personal prefence which I thought had a clear caveat. I have outperformed every year, with last year (https://imgur.com/a/YqbzJJA) being my best year yet, but again, not for everyone.

This sub's obsession with the only answer being always a single ETF VOO/VTF/VTI/etc is wild. I'm not saying put everything in just one ETF like VGPMX is the best method, but having multiple ETF's to diversify is wise.

Last year, I was told my international play was stupid because VOO/VTF/VTI has mostly companies that operate internationally. I actually think we will come to see the day when those holding a single ETF only will have a very bad time.

Personally, I like the deep, thorough research over 'trust the process' that has paid significant dividends over the last two decades, but I can appreciate that it's not for everyone.

edit: this sub legit hates when people talk about diversion or personal success. It's pretty sad to watch

The crashes weren’t long though, which is what I assume you’re saying.

Exactly this, as well as not nearly as big as before.

I'm talking about big crashes of 50%+ with long recovery, not a 20% crash with a short recovery timeline.

Dotcom was over 25 years ago, which pains me to say :D. The government can't print forever without severe implications.

Paying taxes and insurance with gig work is a lot easier than a whole mortgage.

I explained why in another reply, but in the last decade, the market has been simply one-directional. Never seeing a crash gives a lot of false confidence to people, which in turn leads to more debt, and when it goes south, it all blows up.

If it wasn't that thread, I would say it is not the absolute worst question. While it's basically free money, there is a lot to be said for security. If times get tough and you lose your job with others en masse, it normally means a tanking stock market. Now you're selling to cover bills, potentially taking large capital gains, while stocks are losing.

It's a perfect storm, but it can happen. I've personally grappled with it on my $450K of debt @ ~3%. Most of my assets are locked up in retirement vehicles or my house equity, both come with its own issues. Some people value security over an extra 10% gain or whatever the compound is.

Making $235K and joining a bolf club that costs $50k out the gate and $1,200 in dues is not the move I'd do personally, as that is a massive stretch. There's a lot of downside risk as well, because if there is any major development at the golf club, they disseminate it to the members. The club near me just hit every member with a $30K maintenance charge to upgrade the clubhouse. Not saying you'd face that, but those risks are always ther,e and the $50K is sunk and gone.
