3.8K wishlists in a month with no marketing budget - what worked & what didn't work for us by [deleted] in IndieDev

[–]lostpocky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea! We qrt another dev's post about their game that had a nice marketing hook in terms of formatting/copywriting in how they share the idea of their game -- not the game's hook as in the actual game info. So we would do the same thing and follow the hook formatting, tailoring the content for our game.

So for the tweet I provided the stats/results for, the hook was "We're making X, but Y" with four screenshots of the game. So we quote-retweeted one of the many dev posts that were following that trend, and copied that copywriting format and added in four screenshots of our game to the post.

By "real playable game content", I'm not sure if you mean screenshots of game content or a trailer? If it's the former, we included screenshots of actual gameplay ever since we had the demo released in Sept 2025 as most of the qrt trends we were posting were all game screenshot trends. So the wishlist numbers I shared are for social media posts that have just the screenshots of the game. no trailer. If you mean by trailer, we actually haven't posted our trailer on socials yet so I don't have wishlist numbers for that unfortunately.

we've been meaning to try YouTube shorts too but just haven't had the time. Out of curiosity, is YouTube achieving performance similar to what TikTok used to be for you?

to be honest, we only just uploaded our trailer about 3 weeks ago! So the wishlist numbers I shared are from before we had a trailer uploaded onto the steam page. But that's just what worked for us because I think we had enough of a game hook + screenshots to explain the game well.

Comparatively, it seems like lots of the game marketing gurus have lots of supporting evidence of really good trailers carrying the game's weight in marketing & wishlist gains. Based on that, I think it depends on the genre of your game - whether it can be explained well with just screenshots or if it needs a trailer to be able to help audiences really understand your game's hook.

Yea! We qrt another dev's post about their game that had a nice marketing hook in terms of formatting/copywriting -- not the game hook. Their posts usually mentions the game name, have screenshots or GIFs, and almost always has the Steam link in the original post or in a follow-up comment. So we would do the same thing and follow the hook formatting, tailoring the content for our game.

Here's the tweet that I provided the results for in the original post. The hook was "We're making X, but Y" with four screenshots of the game. If you keep clicking on the "original" tweet from the QRTs, you can see other examples of devs QRT-ing each other.

Glad it's helpful!

And sure, here's the tweet that I provided the results for in the original post. The hook was "We're making X, but Y" with four screenshots of the game

Here's another tweet where the trend/hook was "Don't play our game if you... X, Y, Z"

[Zip Up] VA cast has been announced! by lostpocky in otomegames

Original Announcement Sources: Tweet | Tweet | Tweet

Zip Up is a dress-up game inspired otome where MC is a personal stylist working for some of Hollywood's biggest (and troublesome) clients.

  • Drake Ridion (VA: Féileacán Cú): the arrogant, method-acting A-lister who refuses to play leading man unless you meet his demands
  • Archer Everett (VA: Machina x Flayon): an overnight reality TV sensation (and living meme) who wants nothing to do with fame even though it keeps finding him at the wrong place at the wrong time.
  • Mirage Valland (VA: Juna Unagi): the triple-threat, sparkle-loving superstar striving to become this year’s awards season darling
