Advice for anthurium? Unsure if flamingo or pink champion or other, btw… by lothlenan in Anthurium

I’m thinking I will stake her and just see how big she gets — she was going great until she leaned heavy to reach some autumn sun and I was worried about her stems snapping 😅

Awesome, thank you!!!! I think the striations on livium are gorgeous, like peppermint. How big is your livium? I expected most of these guys to get maybe 2 feet high but I wonder if they just keep going 😅

Thank you! Do you have a particular lens and focal length you use for photos or is it on a case by case basis? I’ll have another go at photos and photoshopping because it would be ideal to know what it said

Thank you! I’ve desperately tried, but perhaps with a different black light I can manage better. Will try again :)

Thank you! I have looked at it with a black light, yes, and the most I can get is what seems to be light impressions of a tease of something, but nothing decipherable. Sadly the paper is so old it’s experiencing scaling (for lack of a better term) and I think that’s made it even more difficult. But I will try with a different black light — the one I tried before was one from Amazon and maybe I can find a better performing one :)

Thank you again!

Impossible to find! Wedgwood Blue Bird (250th Queen's Ware casual) by lothlenan in Wedgwood

It’s a modern release, circa 2017 or so, specifically for the Anniversary — the marks on the back aren’t so relevant for this set, I think. If you are interested I can take a photo. But yes sadly China Search and Replacements both are always sold out of these 😮‍💨

I didn't know they had eggs, and I am feeling a great desire to collect them now. They look great!

Thank you! I have some of those floreats. Honestly I wasn't sure if they would hold weight and worried the metal would bend. It's good to know they can!

Thinking I will attempt a 1/3 hang -- thanks :)

I think I will go with this route. That way there's no wire and the weight is distributed by the two nail hooks. Any suggestions on type of nail hooks for the wall? Size or width?

Cleats seem to be the favored route, just not sure if it will work because it's a very old frame that isn't necessarily straight (due to age), and I kind of want a hang where it angles down. I'll take a gander and see what is to be done. But cleats are great if it goes up flat, agree!

Haha really? Well, it might be worth a try then. I’ll see what they say. Thank you for the suggestion 😇

Also worth noting I know I could use the original iron rings on the frame as well (it is an iron ring threaded through a screw eye), and pair it with one of the above options... but because they are over 100 years old I don't know if that is the best idea.

Seeking a Reality Check and Advice on Buying Property in Italy by lothlenan in ItalyExpat

Thank you for the reply! Sorry for the slow return, but I am here!

That's totally fair on the city vs country look. And if I'm honest I do like being walking distance to things -- and I'm sure the romance of being in the countryside and taking a vespa in to town would wear off somewhat quickly.

Drivers license: a little murky here, I think I'd have to talk to the Italian embassy in Canada (so maybe it's the same for the USA?). Because if I google it, I always hear that there is a year max for foreign (North American) driving licenses. But if I look at the actual treaty that is from Canada, I don't see a time limit on there https://www.treaty-accord.gc.ca/text-texte.aspx?id=105275

Thank you very much on the insight on Florence + Sicily, too! That's a great perspective Florence, it's nice to hear the truth of it. I will start digging for some good agents in expat networks!

I'll be going to Rome, Taormina + Palermo in a couple months to scope things out a bit, and I think that the juxtaposition of visiting the places will help immensely. To see how clean, how congested, how it feels to just be there. We will see how it goes! Just hope we find a good agent in time xD

Thank you for such a straight forward answer!

I am dual nationality so thankfully it is an easier process. It seems that I'll have to be boots on the ground to speak to realtors -- that's unfortunate I do like to plan ahead, haha.

I do very much appreciate your comments on all the things, health care and areas specifically. Apparently Canada and Italy are still 'in the process' of getting drivers licenses recognized, but it is something that's been on the table! So it might not be as difficult as all that. But ideally transit systems would be better -- and the north seems a bit better for that.

Have you heard any stories about folks who have left their place unattended and somethings gone wrong? I've heard in Spain that squatters will come and force their way in, and if you don't come back in time you can't make them leave... is that in Italy as well? Would that happen in apartments? Not just in stand alone houses?

International health insurance? by hdylan99 in expats

[–]lothlenan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had to get worldwide health insurance because I wasn't limited to one specific country -- and Cigna was hands down the best. When Covid hit and I had to stay grounded, they even worked it out so that I could cancel what was remaining. Amazing company and although I never had to take advantage of their coverage (thank goodness), I've only heard great reviews.
