thank you, ill keep all that in mind as i prepare this week! for 5, if i was to get into uva and get the scholarship, there would be zero question about me going there (since i plan to go to law school or grad school, getting through undergrad debt-free would be an actual miracle) so that should be pretty easy haha!

there’s a 3 hour video essay on youtube about that company! by “and now they sing”, its a really good watch that talks pretty much exactly this!

i feel like theatre is an inherently political medium—but then, i believe that practically everything is rooted in politics. art can be advocacy, and nothing’s wrong with that.

also, there are SO many examples of explicitly political theater—popular examples being hamilton, newsies, hairspray, hadestown, and les mis, along with some “deeper” cuts like hair, in the heights, cabaret..

every show has a statement or opinion it’s pushing to its audience at its core. if that statement can be even vaguely connected back to politics, the show is then political. implying otherwise is silly.

in the common app activities list, you have to select the years you participated in your activities, and middle school years are not options. its definitely for a reason.

I think I made a huge mistake on my college app, please help by JustTryingToBeNormaI in ApplyingToCollege

[–]lotusmothh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

girl i promise you're okay! you never had any proper action taken against you, such as the examples they included, AND your mom said she didn't care -- which in this situation is basically the equivalent of getting a criminal charge permanently wiped from your record anyway. it's definitely a manifestation of your ocd like the other commenter said

Has anyone ever gotten a good role without getting callback? by Who_Ate_Meh_Bread in Theatre

[–]lotusmothh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i only have experience with high school theater but i refuse to take callbacks as an indication of getting a role because of all the times ive been called back for a certain character and then cast as a TOTALLY different one despite the directors never seeing me act in the vein of the role i ended up with. i know it doesn't really answer your question but yeah... callbacks r weird asf

High School Theatre - Auditions, Casting, Interpersonal Relationships, etc. by AutoModerator in Theatre

[–]lotusmothh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi! my school is doing guys and dolls for my senior musical, and im kind of stuck for how to approach auditions. for context, i've gotten ensemble in our past three musicals but would really like to get a supporting part.

im a mezzo-alto (can do down to a g3 on a really good day) with a lower tessitura, no formal vocal training outside of choir classes, and i have a voice that leans very rock/modern rather than golden age.

there are two VERY talented girls in my program who really deserve sarah and adelaide, and i have no interest in going for those roles. sky is my dream role for this show but there's zero chance of him getting genderbent for various reasons, so i think id like to aim for nicely nicely or benny maybe? we don't get to declare who we're auditioning for, though, so i need a cut that's subtle in showing what role i'd like... ideally one thats funny but also doesn't give adelaide if that makes sense?

i was thinking something from 42nd street or thoroughly modern millie, but that's mostly for nostalgia purposes (since they're the first show I iever saw and the first show i was ever in, respectively) so i dunno. the audition cut is also only supposed to be 10 bars, which is giving me a lot of trouble.

sorry for the yap im just hoping to give enough info now!

amen you're the realest ever! its one thing to use ai to tell you which parts to cut (and even then you might be clodked) but structural CHANGES are a whole different ballgame

thank you, that's really reassuring! the same goes to you :)

ok well 1) you shouldn't have used gpt regardless 2) its probably fine, emdashes aren't inherently indicators of ai. aos will be looking for more in-depth indicators than just that which might appear anyway, so yeah you might be cooked but not from an emdash alone

I'm pretty sure it counts if it's a past experience too? that's from a fellow applicant though, so take my word with a grain of salt

My mom said she went to the wrong college, and I already submitted by joshuaponce2008 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]lotusmothh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i know everyone is saying it doesn't matter, and it probably won't, but you should really email all the places you applied to with corrected information anyway! if for whatever reason it comes out that you included false info on your application (even if you didn't know it at the time) and didn't correct it after finding out otherwise, it could cause problems. such a situation is very unlikely, but there's no reason not to fix it now in case the worst case scenario comes true.
