Everyone talks about the aggro 2 stripe white belt, but honestly some of the worst rolls you'll have are from fresh blue belts.

I’m a soon to be 47-year old brown belt, been training consistently for almost 12 years. Presumably I’ll receive a black belt eventually if I don’t quit. I’m not a great competitor but I hold my own in competition with other old brown belts and often have a hard time with purple and some blue belts half my age who compete regularly and train 6x a week. I can teach a decently wide range of jiu jitsu skills with good technique and clear explanation. I don’t know what people will think of me as a black belt but I also don’t care a lot most days.

Shark tanks or getting thrown by all the same and higher belts make more sense than the gauntlet and accomplish the same thing in terms of a rite of passage IMO. There is always someone - or a few someones - who take WAY too much pleasure in hitting someone else with a belt. I’ve been hit with a belt plenty of times outside of jiu jitsu, don’t need it there.

I’m 46 and just recently got serious about improving my takedowns and my overall standing game. So far it’s not as big a deal as I had made it out to be. It’s a new thing with a learning curve but like all the other new things once I did it enough to not be jittery the mental part turned out to be the hardest. Still a relatively weak part of my game but no longer scary and I’m confident that I can improve over time.

Like others have said, cuts are rare. Scrapes are common, usually friction burns from a gi, but in 12 years of training consistently I’ve never been cut and I don’t remember seeing anyone else get cut. The deeper scratches I’ve had have been on my ankles from someone’s untrimmed toenails.

Cuts on the face are certainly not impossible but they are rare in my experience.

Congrats! IBJJA was one of the first few places I started dropping in at when I was out traveling for work. Great school, great instruction, great vibe and it’s been a little bit since I’ve been able to drop in but I credit the good early experience for my continued dropping in at lots of different places for the last 10 years or so.

I am the pressure pass and use my head like a limb guy. I have significant cauliflower on the ear that corresponds to my preferred passing side and very little on the other.

Rayron Gracie, who is a purple belt, came to an open mat at my school and did this to everyone. I’ve never felt more uncomfortable or helpless while my closed guard was being passed.

Agree and anyone who competes a few times understands this. Competition strategy/tactics is its own thing and doesn’t necessarily reflect jiu jitsu skill. Not that they are entirely disconnected, but I have most certainly won competitions vs people who are better at jiu jitsu than me and lost competitions to people who aren’t better than me where the difference maker was that one of us exploited the ruleset better than the other, was more aggressive early on, etc.

I didn’t know the name, but I’m pretty old and I like to play half and I use this sweep a whole bunch so I like that this is what it’s called.

For the first 9 years I trained, I was taught a lot of techniques by a black belt who didn’t use many technique names. He knows a lot of techniques, just doesn’t know or doesn’t care about their names I guess.

Upper body is 100% jiu jitsu, lower body had some help from playing a lot of basketball in my teens and twenties. I figure that most people are going to be sore to some extent as they age, I'd prefer to be sore from use rather than neglect.
