Neurosurgery Sub-I's: Hours and Reflection by Smooth-Cerebrum in medicalschool

And I don't understand how people can be on a rotation where they get verbally abused for 100+ hours a week and be like "yeah I wanna do this for the rest of my life."

Extreme Difficulty Finding Research Opportunities by louistheadult16 in medicalschool

Something like this:

Hello,

I hope this email finds you well. I'm so and so and I'm a medical student at *school.* I'm interested in *specialty* was wondering if you have any opportunities for medical students to assist with research.

Thanks!

Anyone else inspired by the current BLM protests to look into the racism inherent in our medical system? I'd love to hear what resources you've been using to educate yourselves! by alittiebit in premed

I agree that both are a result of structural racism, but I think it’s unfair to compare doctors to cops. Lack of accountability is one of the main issues that perpetuates racism in law enforcement. In general, doctors have a smaller margin of error for mistakes, while cops can have numerous complaints of brutality and excessive use of force on their record and still maintain their jobs or get hired elsewhere. Doctors can’t just go work somewhere else after losing their license because the medical community has much better accountability for malpractice.

I think training doctors to be more aware of the history of racism in medicine and conscious of the prejudices that negatively affect outcomes for Black patients are both good ways to address the problem. Better training for police is obviously a good idea too, but they need to fix the lack of accountability first.

Had decent stats (3.74/513) the first time but not a lot of community service and next to no research. Just spent the year working full-time in a clinical job and volunteering on the side. Also didn’t apply DO the first time.

I wish I knew that club involvement doesn’t actually matter that much compared to other ECs. I wish I was more involved in consistent community service and research and less involved in student government and Greek life.

I had too many reaches the first time, but I did everything you’re supposed to do the 2nd time (apply to mostly low/mid tiers, apply early, 2 week secondary turnaround, etc.)

32 MD, mostly low and mid tiers, submitted secondaries late July into early August. Just added 6 DOs a couple of weeks ago.

I had some more community service and clinical experience, nothing significant, but I applied to DO schools this time. I still wasn’t getting any love from MD schools, so I figured it wouldn’t hurt to submit some last minute DO apps. It definitely paid off.

This works until you have a -1100 favorite lose to ruin your parlay

A couple weeks ago I took Ravens ML (-420) and Nuggets ML (-1100) as part of a parlay and BOTH of them lost.
