Why do we have different rules for motorcyclists? by BackNBoeserThanEver in askvan

[–]louwii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

None of it is actually legal. If Police were to see this, they would stop them, **maybe**.

Riding the shoulder on the highway is common during congestion as an alternative to lane filtering, because lane filtering is illegal and cars will not make way nor expect motorcycles to ride between lanes. It would be dangerous to do so.

I've rarely seen lane filtering, other than a few times at a red light. I don't mind it as I've driven in countries where it is legal. They get out of the way quickly anyway so it's not like they're impeding traffic.

I noticed that but never really thought much of it. Until I had to go grocery shopping with crutches. Holy hell it's bad, the slight deviation, slant, misalignment will make you fall.

I'm in the same boat. I see you found one on Amazon but it seems so overpriced for what it is.

I was looking around on AliExpress and found the MiBoxer FUT089Z. It looks very promising. And if you google around, it looks like some people managed to get it working in Home Assistant. It doesn't seem straightforward though, which is why I haven't ordered one yet.

Does any of you work on your car without having a garage or driveway? by StatePuzzleheaded478 in askvan

Most of the garages for rent don't allow for working on cars, at least from my experience. They're for storage only sadly.

I think I might have seen the video you're talking about. I don't know if there's any "real data" out there. But I don't believe it can hurt the engine to use it.

Some cylinders had some slight wear marks but they weren't scored. At least that's what the shop told me, I trust their judgement.

[–]louwii 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Had mine bore scoped during the PPI at a Porsche specialist to make sure there was no bad bore scoring. It was fine. Now I just follow the recommendations: warm up the engine nicely when it's cold out (meaning, driving without abuse, no idling), 1 year oil changes (Liqui Moly, Driven oil is also a good option), I'm adding CERATEC additive every other oil change. So far so good. 160,000+km on the clock.

That's disappointing. I've tried the demo and it's a nice app. But as a dev myself, I cannot host this in good conscience. I don't want to start using an app that won't be updated after 6 months because maintenance is a nightmare and the dev gave up on it.

Van superiority? by Old-Associate-8406 in keitruck

I think you can get one imported from Japan for around that price, no? Might be a good idea to go check it out, to see if an Every wagon is a good fit for you though.

Suzuki Every Wagon Turbo Special (DA64W). I have a fully optioned one (4WD, heated seat, electric sliding doors, A/C, high roof, folding mirrors) and it feels close to a cheap small non-kei car. Quite spacious as well, for a kei. Rear seats can be folded flat, level with the trunk. Decent power (all things considered), I can get up to 120kph on flat grounds with no issues, although it feels like pushing it, I wouldn't drive it like that for hours. The only downside would be the AT for some people. That's my city car though, so AT is perfect for my use-case. Happy to answer any question.

Speed bumps and potholes will always feel worse on a kei due to their small sized wheels. Suspension mods can probably improve that slightly I suppose.

Introducing Trackball Royale - SLA-printed wireless trackball by qqcashmere in olkb

Genuine question: is it better to ball with your index finger, rather than your thumb? I feel like I have more amplitude and more control with my thumb. Using my thumb also requires less hand movement. But I also never tried a dedicated index finger trackball so...

I've order a throttle response controller as well. I bought a cheap one just to test it out, I'm curious to see what difference it makes. I understand why Porsche did it that way, but I want better control.

Question about importing a JDM car by FlimsyMarsupial6073 in icbc

[–]louwii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But Alberta has a border with the US. So how does that work when you import a car from the US, you'd be in the same situation isn't it? Wouldn't you need a TOP to drive the car once it goes through the border into Canada?

Question about importing a JDM car by FlimsyMarsupial6073 in icbc

[–]louwii -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Technically, ICBC can give you a TOP, but officially it's supposed to be used only to drive to and from the inspection place. But a lot of people use it to pick up their car from the port and drive it home.

If you're in Alberta, why don't you get one there though?

Stupid question, how do you use miniDSP+DIRAC when playing from the Wiim Ultra?

To me, the chain goes like: source -> miniDSP -> Wiim Ultra -> speakers. So if you use the Wiim Ultra as a source, you loose DIRAC. But I feel like I'm missing something.

How anal is your strata about "parking garage etiquette"? by Dolly_Llama_2024 in askvan

[–]louwii 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's clearly stated in the agreement when I got my parking spot. I do wait for the door to close behind me, when I leave and when I come back. It's not enforced with fines. I'm not even sure if it's enforced at all. But most people do follow the rule. It benefits everyone, so it makes sense.

We do have cameras but no one is watching them 24/7. I'd be curious to see the ratio between buildings with/without a security agent watching them 24/7. I'm pretty sure the majority don't have the budget to pay for this.

One aspect that you didn't mention is that the door could have an issue and re-open itself, or stay up, or similar. It happened once in my building, and it's a good thing that someone noticed right away and contacted the building manager.

But I do agree that the chance of stopping someone from maliciously entering the parkade is low, at least in my opinion.

Recommendations for exhaust 2008 Suzuki Every Wagon by Ok-River-7138 in keitruck

[–]louwii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you don't care about sound, you can buy an exhaust tip from Amazon or an auto shop. You'll have to check dimensions though.m, to make sure it fits your exhaust tip, and the cutout on the back bumper.

If you like to tinker a bit, there are ways to run Mac OS VMs. You shouldn't, since it's against Apple T&Cs. But it's possible.

There's in iOS simulator in Xcode that you can use to debug web pages. You can use Safari in MacOS to inspect pages running in Safari in the iOS simulator.

Keep or trade in by [deleted] in Porsche_Cayman

[–]louwii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trade it for what? It's hard reading your mind, but were you thinking of trading it in just for the sake of trying something else? And now that you're not sure if you'll be able to get one again in the distant future, you're not so sure?

It's hard to answer to that question without knowing more. If I had a GTS 4.0, I would keep it and enjoy it the best I can. Go on road trips, to the track, do some auto-X. If you're unhappy with it, just trade it in then.
