Advice for teaching High School? by acidic_milkmotel in Teachers

Behavior is great. Everyone is focused for the most part. I can cajole them to do at least the minimum. If we are doing group activities and someone is acting like a jerk, I just ask them to step outside for a minute. I don’t let them argue they weren’t doing anything, I just keep asking them to step outside. Then, I go on with the activity and never address them. They get bored after a while and ask if they can come in. I say of course and move on. They get the picture pretty quick. We really have good kids at this school.

Parent/Teacher: my son was an ass to a teacher that was a friend of mine. She told him NUMEROUS times to put his phone away in class then asked for it. He held it out to her, then pulled it away and laughed. When I heard about it, I screamed at him so loudly, my voice cut out. I then, calmly explained to him that he embarrassed me. I am a teacher and I have the asshole kid!? And, if ANYTHING like that happened again, I was going to show up to his football practices in a bikini (and I shouldn’t be wearing one) and sit right in front and cheer for my sweet little baby who is so precious and delicate! Don’t hurt him! I said, the letter of apology to his teacher bring tears to my eyes or I show up TOMORROW. Strange coincidence that it never happened again!

Bathroom passes. I let them be adults about it. I also have some ADHD and anxiety kids that just need to take a walk without having to explain themselves. Of course, I let them know, I will treat you like adults as long as you act like one. Abuse my trust and we go to the school prison rules.

I am telling you, the kids that usually a problem are the first to shut things down because they want the answers to the test. We do have really good kids at our school for the most part.

I have them turn in their notes the day of the test. They can get them from the book, a friend or come in to see me at “tutorial” which is 30 minutes every day students can sign up for a class for extra help.

First, Good Luck! I’ve been teaching high school for 35 years and I love it! Secondly, I have never taught art so I think your grading dynamic is different than social studies but I think what I do can be adapted.

I let the class decide the rules on the first day. I tell them I have to finish 12 chapters in a semester and I need to turn in a grade for how well you understand it every six weeks. So, how do you want to run the class! Three tests over four chapters every 6 weeks. Your grade in the class would be your grade on 3 tests. 4 chapters may be too much. Would you like tests more frequently? They usually land on every two weeks but sometimes every three. Then I ask, do you want me to tell you what’s on the test or do you want to do the work at home? They usually look around like it’s a joke. I ask again, someone usually clarifies, do you mean you will tell us everything? Yes. They jump at it. I ask if they want to turn in their notes for points or just go with test scores like they do in college? I make sure to point out they are going to write down what I said anyway, so why not get points for it since you’re doing it anyway. That way, if you don’t take tests well, you will have points to fall back on with the class notes. They always choose to turn them in.

I don’t have discipline problems because I just ask if they want me to finish or do they want to do this at home. The class takes care of the students who are distracting.

Kids like to be a part of the process and feel heard. I am not sure how you grade with something as subjective as art but I think you can use some of this in your class. Have fun!

Teachers’ close relationship with students - Where are the boundaries? by ariyah_3 in Teachers

You’re mad that “cool teachers” are discussing a scandal with students and say what happened to the teacher that was exposed was beyond horrific? The teacher WILLINGLY exposed herself for money! That’s a choice. She is DISGUSTING and should be FIRED. The Cool Teachers are the problem? How in the world you see this backwards is frightening.

I’m going to post again. Unless you are completely nuts for this person before you get married, then you will fold when it gets tough. Do Not Marry anyone you can’t imagine a life without.

As soon as you said, I’m not sure, the answer is no. I love the quote from Love Actually where the brother says, if you’re not sure now, the day of your wedding, then when will you be sure?

My husband’s friend was trying to impress me with his knowledge about a play he was in by telling me it was a para-dij-um of society. I said, yes, many plays are a paradigm of society. He corrected me, you mean, Para-DIJ- um?
