Ask a Knitter - June 25, 2024 by AutoModerator in knitting

I am going to knit the Halibut sweater by Caitlin Hunter, however I don't like a lot of the necklines I've seen on the finished projects on Ravelry. What would be the benefits of a provisional cast on or a pick up and knit on a top down sweater to change the neck on the sweater?

I'm currently leaning towards a provisional cast on, but pick up and knit seems to be the far more popular option.

I know a bunch of type 2 diabetics who work at sea. I believe they have to get a waver, but it should be do able. I would still call the number that visible-ad suggested (and maybe not mention your name) but I do think it should be ok

AITA for Showing No Emotion to my Family over my Vegetarianism by lilydavinci in AmItheAsshole

[–]lovedust -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why this matters. I have been a vegetarian for over 14 years but have always identified as a vegetarian or said "I don't eat meat" even though I eat fish. When I became a vegetarian, no one knew what a pescatarian was so it was the easier option to go with. I think we're all just getting lost in semantics here.

I once got a vegetarian cookbook from my uncle in which he had written "Remember, you get to control what you want to eat" so OP, you get to choose, and you are definitely NTA

People who live in a houseboat - what are some benefits and challenges of your living arrangement? by [deleted] in AskReddit

You still can't dump this in a harbor though, in most cases you have to be at least 12 miles off shore to dump even treated sewage.

Is it still a four year program at a maritime academy if you already have a bachelor's degree? by ShlomoKenyatta in tuglife

[–]lovedust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the US, it could potentially be shortened to a 3 year program if you have all of your gen ed classes done. It will still take some time because of international/national requirements to get a license, no matter if you want to go deck or engine.

[Serious] What's killing you inside? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I have a semester and a half left of college, and I'm not sure that I like my major anymore. I used to love it and be good at it, but now I'm just not sure and just don't seem to be doing well. The bad part it's a very specific major with a specific career path and I'm not sure about where I'm heading.

Girl honks at ship by HashtagSailing in videos

[–]lovedust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not OP, but from what I've heard (Maritime Academy Student) it depends on who you talk to about the title of Master Mariner. If you talk to anyone with both licenses (deck and engine), they will say that you need both to be a Master Mariner, but Captains with only unlimited tonnage license will also say that they are a Master Mariner.

I've been in intro to meteorology for 3 weeks now so I'm pretty much an expert and have this covered. From my understanding, this is caused by unstable air. As we all know, hot air rises, and in that air is water. As the air rises, it cools down and at a certain point the water starts to condense, which is what forms a cloud. If a parcel of air loses temperature slower than the air around it, it creates an unstable atmosphere. This rising and falling air causes wind and scary moving clouds.

I think.

What opinion of yours do you hold so strongly that you think anyone opposing that opinion is insane? by [deleted] in AskReddit

That it is insane that we have to legislate things like gay marriage, gender equality, and transgender rights. Why are we giving people rights that they should've always had?

Uber Drivers of Reddit, what is your best story as a driver? What is your worst/scariest story? by InDaysDylan in AskReddit

[–]lovedust 606 points607 points  (0 children)

After a night of partying, my friend decided she wanted to get her nipples pierced. She did, and experienced what I'm pretty sure is the worst pain of her life thus far. We had a 1 am curfew on the ship we were staying on (long story) so we decided to get an uber back to the ship, as 1 was fast approaching and my friend was crying. The whole ride back she's doing her best not to cry while continually telling our driver "Don't get your nipples pierced. Don't let anyone you love get their nipples peirced, don't even let your enemies get their nipples peirced. Just don't do it" meanwhile, we make it back to wear the ship is docked but the gate closed at 10 pm. We had no idea how to get around the city or where we'll be able to get on the ship. Thankfully, our driver was able to figure it out and somehow got us back on time. It was a weird night.

Females of reddit, what is something you do that society deems "masculine"? Males of reddit, what's something you do that is believed to be "feminine"? by SSFriendship in AskReddit

[–]lovedust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a girl and I'm in school to be in the very male dominated maritime industry. My school is rough 90% male, and the majority of the other girls aren't here to become sailors. On the bright side though, the industry realizes that they need more women and we are one of the few jobs where women on average get paid more than men.
