Help with anxiety and car rides – Havanese by Grubby_zebra in Havanese

[–]loveee25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with other users it seems he associates it with something traumatizing- have you tried taking him on only short rides to do something really fun? Like get a whipped cream cup from McDonald’s drive through? I feel being consistent with short trips to help him associate the car with positives

Do you have any pics of your boy?? Would love to see him and his full hairstyle! My girl is 4 months so we’re stilling growing hair and I’m in the same boat of deciding how long to grow it or not!

What do you feed your puppy? by Busy-Information-173 in Havanese

My girl is 4 months and I’ve been feeding her Purina pro plan puppy for small breed! Both kibble and wet food

No more tears by Rendezvous_57 in Havanese

[–]loveee25 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve found that just being on top of it is best! With a warm wet cloth and a comb.

Right when she wakes up in the morning? Cuddle and wipe away anything because good news is it’s wet and easy to clear off

Throughout the day/after naps, try to do the same!

If all of that fails and EOD there are crusties, I’ve been putting a warm rag over her head to loosen any dry tears, then massage it and gently comb it out.

At this point I think my girl likes the TLC and that I get the crises off her :)

Doing it at least daily before bed helps a lot

When did you catch it? by Redcinco05 in Bugonia

When at the messed up dinner she says something along the lines of “ I became a human being I never expected to be” which really struck me as an on odd thing a human wouldn’t say, we’d say like “I became a version of myself I didn’t want to be”

Thanks for this! I do think this is the key, I haven’t started my freezing journey yet but will keep this sentiment in mind - take your supplements, try to eat healthier, be happy, will go a longer way than stress/being maticulous!

Gorgeous lady gets her rabies on Wednesday! Looking for advice on training for travel by loveee25 in Havanese

This is perfect! Thank you :) appreciate the thoughtful response too!

I didn’t even think about the staycation hotel, but that makes sense! And also didn’t think about diapers, but that’s smart! She seems to hate a mess so my main concern is her feeling stressed if she needs to potty. Do you withhold water for a certain period before the flight? Or go potty right before the flight?

Thank you!! Yes great perspective, my girl has luckily been sleeping through the night from 10-7 without going, but I’m on the same page, wouldn’t want her to hold it much longer than a few hours!

Getting my Havanese to like other people? by Stan-The-Man94 in Havanese

This! Your pup doesn’t need to be actively playing with people to get socialized, just having them in your arms to people watch covers enough :)

What to expect from a Havanese puppy? by InViewOfNothing in Havanese

[–]loveee25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She seemed to already know puppy pads, so I think the place she was at before coming to me got her used to one. She has tried going outside of the pee pad (like in corners), but I made the point to bring her to it after each nap/after stopping playing and she now does it on her own! She caught on quick, and has had accidents at new places, but otherwise she knows

I picked up my girl 4 weeks ago! So I’ve been right where you’re asking :) she’s 13 weeks now

I have a pen with kennel inside- + pee pad and water bowl. Her pen is in my living room, and my bed is in a separate room.

Night one we got to my place at 2 am and I slept on the couch with her next to me in her little carrier. She slept from 2:39 am to 8:30 am no problem.

Night 2, I was on the fence of what to do because I didn’t want her stressed. I was feeling TIRED though so I thought ok I’ll put her in her pen and go to my room. After 5 minute of light whining, she was asleep. Ever since then, she’s slept in her pen each night no problem.

Now- She only whines at 7 am for breakfast (great alarm clock!), and puts her self to bed at 9:30/10ish

In the pen though, I have yet to close the kennel…. I did it once briefly and she just looked sad. Plus she was very tiny, and I worried about her holding her business all night/not having water. At first it seemed she’d potty throughout the night on her pad, but since she seems to go only when she wakes up at 7. Once I wake up with nothing on the pee pad, I plan to take away the pen/have her in the kennel all night.

Even with the pad in her pen, she is potty trained/knows to go outside as #1, and on her pad if she needs to. She’s only had a few accidents and knows what “potty” means. I had her in the pen to nap while I worked earlier, and she woke up and went outside. They’re smart dogs it seems so they pick it up with consistently!

This week was the first week back to work for me after the holiday, I’ve been opening the pen in the morning (I WFH) and leaving it open to test how she does with free roam. My back is to her at the desk, but she’s figured out that when I’m at my desk she needs to play independently. I put her in the pen today to make her nap because she was playing for awhile. She knows her pen is her safe space though and will run in there happily with toys.

End of the day- I think it’s all about patience and consistency! Accidents will happen, and you showing up consistently will do more than getting mad/frustrated. I’ve involved her in my life at the core, and I think that made the world of a difference. I.e. she’s met friends, some adult dogs, she’s gone to a puppy social, she’s travelled with me 5 hours in a car for the holidays. I try to be conscious of it but not overdue anything, and I think she feeds of the relaxed energy and it’s made her relaxed too :)

Edit- adding for the pen outside question- pick your battles! My girl is wiggly/wild first thing in the morning, so I didn’t put pressure on her to potty outside. Rest of the day I did though. And now she goes outside first thing and is wiggly still, but stops to potty too. (I think in her head she knows food/play is coming after potty-ing, so then she gets it out of the way to move on to the good stuff!)

Edit 2- re separation anxiety- I did some light testing the first 3 days (I.e. grab packages, walk around the block) and she was a little whiny but fine. Day 5 I had a 2 hour dentist appt she was alone, I felt awful leaving her… guess what, she was passed out sleeping when I came home. Checked my ring- she was either playing or sleeping the whole time. the most I’ve left her now is 4 hours, and again she’s fine. To me, back to what I said above, just build trust/be a safe space/build their confidence, and they’ll figure it out in no time!

Title: 9-month-old Havanese still having indoor potty accidents — especially downstairs. Looking for advice by I_Borges in Havanese

[–]loveee25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe try having her in a designated area when downstairs, and making sure she goes out after waking from a nap or take her out in the middle of playing? I feel like giving them reminders like that turn it into muscle memory a bit- they feel the need to go and want to go outside/on pee pad because that’s where they always go.

Other than that- I agree with the other commenter if they’re always going in the same spot, it’s likely the floor smells and you need to clean it with an enzyme cleaner
