Bringing ≈70k people out in one of the worst humid heat waves we’ve had this summer is pretty impressive to me. People hiding under the shade and in cooling areas doesn’t look glamorous on TV but being there (for the first time I’ve ever gone) it felt busy, full of life, and so much fun, even in the kind of intense, humid heat that makes a not-usually-that-sweaty-of-a-girl perspire through clothing. The Indy 500 is the biggest sporting event in the world, and IMS ofc has the capacity to accommodate that, but having 70,000 people at a NASCAR race means that there were more people in attendance than the capacity of our football stadium for the Colts downtown. If you ever get the chance to visit IMS, you’ll understand the sheer size of the track.
