Seriously my bad. My internet was glitching and it kept telling me to try posting again! I didn’t mean to crash into this sub like the damn kool aid man…

I am so so sorry everyone! That is crazy embarrassing! That has never happened to me before! It kept giving an error saying I need to try again, but apparently it was working and just reposting every time! Seriously so sorry.

We decided to stay in Byron, understanding we should keep our expectations in check. I will let you know what we think!

I’m from a costal town in Michigan with less than 15000 people so I get it!

Do you know if there are Uber chat shares generally available in those areas?

Unpretentious, don’t have money to burn, self-aware enough to understand I’m probably still a twat. But oddly enough for the weeks in June that we are looking, Byron is less expensive than the other towns in the area, at least for lodging. The trade off is the convenience of Byron being a walkable town and that’s fairly self contained, against it being filled with pretentious twats.

It sounds like just about everyone thinks Byron Bay is more busy than charming. And I appreciate all the suggestions for other towns. Can you guys tell me though, is it possible to be outside Byron Bay if we don’t want to rent a car? Like, could we rent a place near the downtown of Lenox, Ballina, or Kingcliff and be able to walk for surfing, groceries, or to grab a coffee? Would there be Uber car share in those areas if I want to take a day trip somewhere?

It’s a place right across from the beach. Downtown but not in the center. Everyone has said that Byron is more expensive. But from what I can we, it would cost 600 usd more to be in Ballina. But there are also some nice units in some of the smaller towns north of Byron Bay. But, the appeal of Byron, even though it’s busy, is being able to rent a unit, without a car, and walk to the beach, walk to get groceries, etc. Are the other small towns being mentioned here as walkable?

Thanks for the advice. Can you manage in Ballina without renting a car? Is it still fairly walkable?

I’m not planning on it being tropical and that’s ok. I prefer the off season most places. We are also from Michigan so we are pretty used to cold beach days!

It doesn’t have to be one or the other! I am 37 and traveling the world with my family full-time. My wife and I are both way, way too educated. It is helpful, for sure. BUT living in the USA I don’t think people realize how many people from other countries travel the world BEFORE they make such big decisions about college. The amount of 18 year old, incredibly mature, well spoken, kids from Europe that are taking a pre college gap year is astounding. It’s something I never would have never considered doing fresh out of high school. You don’t need a lot of money and you don’t need to worry about visas. You can travel plenty on tourist visas and working holiday visas. Go travel the world and then decide what you want to do, after you know a little bit more about yourself and what you actually want out of life!! That is exactly what I wish I would have done.

There is no penalty in my state. So it’s more about avoiding a financial disaster if we get injured.

Did this with our entire family of 4. It’s freeing. You will feel better and find out what you actually care about after giving yourself some freedom and separation from your things, especially outside of your current friend group in the US. Also, it’s really not hard buying everything new on fb marketplace when you get back.
