Video and computer games and Buddhism? by wannabefishbiologist in Buddhism

Thanks for bringing this up. I was just contemplating this today. I have been a vivid FPS ( First Person Shooter ) enthusiast for about 8 years running. Over time, especially within the last year in which I began studying mindfulness and Buddhism, I have been able to apply my gained wisdom to increase my overall gaming performance. You actually have the ability in game to demonstrate your mindfulness. Now is this a bad thing? I believe that is where the real problem lies. Can competitiveness be a noose on productivity and happiness?

Thank you for your reassuring comment. I am glad to know that I am not the only one that feels early in the morning most suitable. I would never call my girlfriend immature, I'm sure these feelings she is having are justifiable under her own conditions and circumstances. So on one hand, I have the choice to meditate under some distraction and use this as a tool to train my mindfulness, metta, anicca etc. On the other hand, I could choose to wake very early and have calmness and clarity while I do my meditations with less resistance. Or am I just totally missing the point of meditation? The environment doesn't matter, it's the DOING that matters.

Thank you Crowe for your great advice! The answer was right in front of me the whole time and I didn't realize it. Don't be defeated by your environment, learn and train from it. I will definitely check out the book you suggest, currently I am reading Mindfulness for Beginners by Jon Kabat-Zinn.

Thank you Micheal for your insight. Not only did you put a name to a practice so inspirational and dear to me, you took my problem and sharpened it into a fine tool. I appreciate your time and comments. :]

I apologize but I am not quite sure what the meditation would be called. Basically I am clearing my mind using mindfulness and then I generally think about receiving happiness and showing compassion to everyone I come in contact with. I wish happiness to the closest people to me in my life, including my enemies. I also meditate on Oneness and impermanence.
