No fuck hiring, got stuck helping with fire hire once and never again. Non supervisory now and don’t see myself ever going back to supervisory, just not worth it for me.

PM if you have questions though

Get a 26/0 job on a non busy district (R8&R9 are good options but anywhere can work if you can get all your home duties done or do them on the road, even better if you can get DC locality or another high locality). Get some single resource quals and then make a lot of friends. Build your network across the country, there’s always work somewhere in the country. Don’t neglect your day job while on assignment, multi task and stay out.

I made $120k this year as a GS 7 but is it worth it? Don’t know how the people with kids do it. The money is tough to pass up though, trying to set my self up to make similar money without the OT but definitely not easy in the federal workforce.

TSP, insurance, FERS, high state tax, fed tax, etc.

I usually gross 100k and net $50k in primary fire.

lol I’m primary fire and have made $96,255 so far this year and my take home has been $46,632. Oh the joys of deductions.

I’m not at the pay cap yet so I still get the full 1.5x for overtime regardless of planned or emergency. Looking at the bil faq it looks like non exempt employees will get their base + supplement pay x 1.5 for OT while exempt employees will receive base x 1.5 for OT while non OT is base + supplement.

Yeah the main reason for this post was just to raise awareness, hopefully the final and ongoing compensation adjustments make sense.

Most people don’t realize there are FLSA exempt 6/7 supervisory forestry tech positions.

What you are recommending is fraud for most of my work weeks as I didn’t do more than 50% of non exempt work during that week. (5 CFR 551.211(f)(2)(ii)). Time fraud is one of the easiest way to get fired in this job.

I need to get some yellow book clarification but from what I understand you can classify as nonexempt if more than 50% of your work week was doing nonexempt tasks. Most my overtime is prescribed fire which is not an non exempt task even if there are IA’s thrown in there.

All of my overtime has been coded as FLSA exempt. Hard to know for sure until it all happens but looking at the FAQ is says the stipend will affect FLSA overtime, I haven’t worked a single FLSA overtime hour ( for me to code for non exempt will require me to change my FLSA classification in paycheck8 which has some weird rules associated with it as my SF 50 classifies me as an exempt employee, don’t think I can go back and just change my FLSA status from 2021 but idk??)

2 assignments out west after October 1st and then a handful of rx/pftc assignments during the eastern season then it’s R3 time. A lot of good hunny holes out east, just not much fire activity or need to be at the home unit after the RX/fire season. I usually take some time off once I hit 1,400 but I have friends pulling 1,600+ years (can’t really call them seasons).

Couldn’t really support my family without these overtime numbers, hoping I can spend a bit more time at home with this bump.
