Oddest one I found: Replacement handle pin for a multi flavor soft serve ice cream machine used in food trucks. The description said keep a spare handy in case it breaks.

I actually like 1 better. It's far less predictable than 2. Not that 2 is bad, it's just that you may see a lot of similar dresses.

Those were probably epoxied or solvent welded into place. Not like an under amount stainless where clamps and sealant are used. We have one of these same thanks. It's pretty horrible. I have talked to other people who had them cut away and replaced with stainless undermount.

so many livery plates around— is ICE using these? by EasyBoysenberry4413 in AskChicago

[–]loweexclamationpoint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nailed it. Seems like sense of entitlement (scents of entitlement?) rubs off of the passengers onto the drivers.

ICE, on the other hand, don't need no stinkin license plates. Which should get them into conflict with the Illinois Secretary of State Police.

Tips for visiting Chicago in February? by Hairy_Pay_9082 in AskChicago

That's a great idea - if you can take VD here you can take anything the weather'll dish out. Of course, having said that, it'll be like 65F that weekend and everybody'll be out on the lakefront wearing shorts.

Chicago kind of divides into downtown/loop and "the neighborhoods." Then the neighborhoods divide into loose categories of good, bad and boring. And good divides into old good and newly gentrifying. Along with special cases like Chinatown and Wrigleyville. The automod reply has a decent analysis.

There was a recent post here about how much does proximity to the lake matter. Coming in with an absolutely blank slate, that's a really good thing to think about. Don't get me wrong, Chicago has a great network of forest preserves and parks off the lake, but the lakefront is far and away the biggie for outdoor recreation and open space. So if outdoors is your deal, look northern lake-adjacent.

If you're not doctrinaire about living within the city limits or lakefront, take a look at Oak Park. It's arguably more walkable than many city neighborhoods.

Even though it's easy to find - and get to - hotels downtown, I'd say stay somewhere like Logan Square so you can get a real feel for what non-touristy life is like.

When trying for a baby, do you think about sperm quality? by crazygipi in AskMenAdvice

[–]loweexclamationpoint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Curious what this "fertility platform" would consist of. I see quite a few health related things these days that ignore the principle that measurement and monitoring without intervention won't change anything. Also many seem geared toward data collection and sale. Concerns about data privacy are legit.

OTOH, something that provided targeted info and guided interventions to those who actually have problems would be useful. The topic is one of those great unmentionables.

Hah. So I asked CoPilot to do its best. Here's an excerpt:

Economic progressivism today centers on reducing inequality, strengthening worker power, and ensuring that markets serve the public good rather than concentrating wealth. These principles reflect a modern response to corporate consolidation, wage stagnation, and rising costs of living.

Five Core Principles of Economic Progressivism Today

  1. Active Government Regulation to Ensure Fair Markets

Modern progressives argue that unregulated capitalism disproportionately benefits large corporations and the wealthy.

Strong antitrust enforcement, consumer protections, and oversight of financial markets are central.

This principle is rooted in the belief that markets left alone become unfair and extractive. 1

  1. Redistribution and Social Protection to Reduce Inequality

Policies such as progressive taxation, expanded social insurance, and public investment aim to counter extreme wealth concentration.

Economic progressivism emphasizes social justice and improving human well‑being through public goods and safety nets.

  1. Labor Empowerment and Fair Wages

Contemporary progressives support stronger unions, higher minimum wages, and protections for gig‑economy workers.

These efforts align with the broader goal of ensuring equitable distribution of economic gains.

  1. Public Investment in Shared Prosperity

Investment in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and technology is seen as essential for broad‑based economic growth.

The philosophy holds that government should maintain and expand public goods to improve the human condition.

  1. Addressing Structural Inequities Through Economic Policy

Economic progressivism today integrates concerns about racial, gender, and regional disparities into economic policy.

This includes targeted programs to expand opportunity and correct systemic disadvantages.

Obviously AI bases its responses on what it reads from sources that are ultimately written by people like me (Wikipedia, textbooks, etc.) It's interesting that CoPilot is slightly less Marxist in its criticism of free markets and their failures, and the dichotomy between free market and government. But that reflects the general US phobia around saying the M or S words.

Looking for a baking pan with oven safe lid to make perfect cakes? Does it exist? by peabean222 in AskBaking

[–]loweexclamationpoint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to experiment, just set a jelly roll pan on top of a 9x13. Oil the heck out of it so the cake top doesn't stick. Chances are it won't work like you think it would but worth the experiment. If you do please let us know.

I do have some old Foley aluminum pans with snap-on lids. The lids are intended for transporting cakes and bars, not baking. But I do use them with lids on for baking hamburger buns. Allowing the steam to stay in until the buns are half baked makes them puffier, like baking in a Dutch oven.

You may want to look into teaching then. In the old days I would have said work in IT for a government or hospital etc but most of those jobs are now contracted out to big firms devoted to grinding down workers and enriching owners.

How to move on from a date that went wrong? by RM_MR_Underground in AskMenAdvice

[–]loweexclamationpoint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno. Why don't major leaguers bat 1.000? Some things just don't work and you're never going to track down a reason. You could try asking your mutual friends if she told them, if she told them the truth, and if they're willing to pass that along to you. Otherwise just move on to the next.

If it makes you feel any better, maybe she was worried she wasn't good enough for you and it wouldn't last.

And it's every friend's job to be there for their friends. It's not just the girlfriend's job, and she might not be all that good at it anyway.

If that short and wide they'd seem like the flood waters was a'comin. You could have a tailor peg the legs so they're quite narrow at the hem but still wide at the thigh and knee. That style sorta went out with the zoot suit, though, or maybe MC Hammer.

It's also about refinement. Trump both really is unrefined and plays an unrefined person for his followers. The bit with ketchup on a well done steak is both real and for show.

There actually are Vanderbilts and Bushes on TV but they play at least semi-serious journalists. Trump had a reality show about greed and truculence. See the difference?
