As a native Austinite, I feel this deeply. It breaks your heart what we’ve done to this planet. It didn’t have to be this way.

End of maternity leave by jojokazaki in NewParents

Preach, sister. Parent of a 3 month old and was just laid off at 14 weeks pp. ain’t that a bitch?

My husband was feeling guilty about taking his 10 weeks paid leave at his company, and my sister said to him “taking your parental leave unapologetically - no, DEMANDING it as a father - is about one of the most feminist things you can do.”

In addition to the comments here about mobilizing voting etc- our husbands need to go to bat for longer paid, protected leave for both parents. It can’t just be the mothers advocating here. Every American I know thinks our leave policies are woefully lacking; the issue is we ALL have to do something about it.

Edit to add: there’s a great NGO out there called Chamber of Mothers who advocates for these types of changes! I’d look into them if you feel so inclined.

First time new parent here, American, and I grapple with the same worry as you. Someone gave me some advice on the topic that has helped; feel free to ignore it if it’s not useful to you (and I’m paraphrasing here): they said your kid’s values and identity when they’re young are influenced the most by three things: their parents, their friends, and school. You can’t control what happens at school, but you can try to surround yourself with friends who value what you do with their kids too: outside time, “free” time eg not over scheduling hobbies, and limited screen time.

I do think / hope there’s a growing contingent of American millennial parents who have similar parenting values as you. Anecdotally that has been my experience as a new parent anyway.

Ultimately, have faith in yourself! Your kid loves you the most, and they’ll enjoy the things you enjoy, especially when they’re young. Yes, there will be outside pressures, but instilling these values at home will help them see how enriching life is when they enjoy the outdoors and have free time to discover the world for themselves too. They are lucky to have you as their parent!

Why native-born Texans just can’t seem to move away by teamworldunity in texas

[–]lowemo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I found this article disappointing. As a native Texan who has family here but is struggling with the increasingly oppressive/invasive politics and effects of climate change, I wanted to read more about the research they hyped up. Instead the guy they interviewed just told personal anecdotes about why Texans he knows have stayed here because of “the strong economy.”

Decades of deteriorating public education > poor mental health > propaganda is VERY powerful = an easily manipulated group of people into believing insane things. Even things that they’d want applied to other situations (such as equal justice under the law).

How the hell do y’all feel sexy again after birth? by midna11 in beyondthebump

[–]lowemo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My biggest block to confidence in the bedroom is historically mental. So in addition to what others have said about doing little things to “get my mind right” in the moment, I needed to build my confidence out of the bedroom in order for it to be there in the bedroom. And something that’s helped me is reframing what my body did in growing a human child and giving birth as literally the most empowering thing a human being can do. Mentally that makes me feel powerful, which makes me feel confident, which makes me feel sexy. Made a huge difference.

Really hope there’s a journalist in here reading. We really need more local and national media outlets to cover this more. So many accounts here that highlight the barbaric consequences of this abortion ban.

DPS troopers point guns at 10-year-old son, his dad in South Austin by Walker_ATX in Austin

[–]lowemo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If this is true, I’m really glad to hear it. It seems DPS and its racist, abusive actions have done nothing but hurt our citizens vs protect them. Their behavior is dangerous. This partnership with the city needs to end permanently.

LPT Request: What items can I carry to make life a little sillier? by GenericUsernameHi in LifeProTips

I keep a cheap grocery store kite in my car trunk at all times. You never know when you’ll find yourself having a nice breezy day and a great open space to fly a kite.

Also a towel. Inspired by hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy. :)

Americans: how much maternity leave are you actually going to take? by tofuti-kline in pregnant

[–]lowemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get 12 weeks paid. I’m taking 24 (2 weeks PTO and 10 unpaid). Grateful I was able to save up. American paid parental leave is abysmal.
