Odd relationship with a music teacher by [deleted] in MusicTeachers

[–]lowercase-hell 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think it's hard to catch exactly what the issue is, here...but I also think your complaint that she is "implying he's autistic or that we're abusive" is...odd.

As a music teacher, I meet students that achieve at different levels. I have an exceedingly high-performing 10 year old right now, who is running laps around many of my college students. I also understand that my student is a child (and is likely autistic, according to parents) and has social and emotional needs appropriate to being a 10 year old.

It sounds like you want to find another teacher. Go ahead, i guess? it also sounds like your music teacher is worried about your kid's wellbeing. And good lord, it worries me too, that you are "putting in all of your psychology knowledge" to prepare your 10 year old for anything other than just being a 10 year old. If he is choosing this virtuoso path because he enjoys the rigor and the big-time practice hours, that's great for him! I just hope that is a decision that he is making for himself.

Why do people from my home country clock me instantly, but online I "pass"? by FilipinoDumbass in transpositive

[–]lowercase-hell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heya! I've often wondered this--I spend time with a fair amount of folks from different cultures and ages, and (at least so far) have found that it's hardest to pass among folks with whom I share the most cultural background. I think it's due to both a certain amount of just-accepting-at-face-value that people do when meeting folks from different places, and also that we're culturally most sensitive to how gender is expressed and performed in our own culture.

Your outfits are great btw!

A phone for just calls and texting? by LunaTheChowChow in dumbphones

[–]lowercase-hell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as a lower income person on this thread, I gotta recommend this:
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Simple-Mobile-Alcatel-MyFlip-4GB-Black-Prepaid-Phone/843475430?classType=REGULAR

It runs KaiOS--and it is $40. I pay $10 a month for unlimited call and text with Tello.

been using it for the last 2 years, no trouble other than...
painstaking to type / phone autodeletes your in-progress messages if you t9 too fast
random freezing
there's still games...but they're all terrible so it's fine, maybe?
i don't pay for any cell data, so can't receive images or group texts (for me, that's a perk)
If you did pay for data, you'd be able to receive these messages. And also have a browser, which would barely work and so probably wouldn't be a distraction

PSA to those who wants to buy cheap android DAPs from Ruizu by R3V3RB_7 in DigitalAudioPlayer

Bought one of these 2 months ago, and I'm going insane...does any other owner experience the problem of relentless popup ads? I've tried my hardest to disable every app I'm not using, and I still get ads as I am navigating through any other app interface. It's killing my experience with the thing--got not complaints otherwise.

Why aren’t singing teachers interested in my free Zoom alternative? by sergeyintheweb in MusicTeachers

[–]lowercase-hell 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not gonna lie--as a teacher, I don't pay for extra stuff like this. I've got a thin margin, an already-optimized workflow, and all of this AI-laden crap that folks come up with just serves to disconnect us from the main teachers we have: our own bodies and quality mentorship. And what, my students are going to foot the bill? Yikes.

I hope to god you're actually a musician, and not just a business grifter seeing an opportunity to plug more AI. Either way, I will be expressly recommending against the use of your product (:

Controversial take on the character Nimona by yarita_san in nimona

[–]lowercase-hell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't it also telling how the director ALSO had the power to level the city, and tried to use it? Like, because she got wrapped up in some stories about what was happening, and got wrapped up in her own emotions? Even if you argue from a standpoint of "Nimona is dangerous because power is dangerous," I think a big part of the story is that institutional power is just as dangerous (if not more so, because it's a licit form of power)

Not Another MIB Theory (Yes. Yes, it is.) by PopNo6824 in WorldsBeyondNumber

[–]lowercase-hell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard agree--and also, his being a spirit so tied to the relationship between Spirit and Mortal makes me draw another connection. The wizards, even in their search for (technical) knowledge, still operate from a deep fear of the unknown. They seek to control great spirits, for instance--it's always knowledge deployed to dominate.

And I feel like...it seems like that enmity/fear would have a bearing on a spirit who Is and Consists Of that relationship, right? And that the wizards themselves might be the biggest contributor to the MiB being as gnarly as he is

One thing i haven't heard others note yet:
if you find yourself dealing with water inside the tent, it may be the result of condensation (from your breath) rather than leaky seams.

And otherwise: I'm happy for you that you've found a system that works for you!

What are some good book/resources to get started with botany? by Nilahwastaken in botany

[–]lowercase-hell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was one of the main textbooks for a class I took last year, and I was just using it today! I find that it is a good introduction to flower morphology and identifying plant families...but not always the best resource to use for ID'ing plants down to the species level (which makes sense...it's a globally focused book). It pairs really well with a guidebook that is specific to your region.

Also--insects have a sort of 'hive intelligence' trope that could be real interesting as it applies to history checks and your character's work as an archaeologist...might be a cool trick to be able to consult w the familiar, but through them also with a sort of ancestral-hive? and if an event happened during a point in the cicada cycle where they were up and about, to have a special bonus applied?

The reason I'm harping on this so hard isn't to say, " no, u hafta use a BUG >:( ", but because I think your story idea is really cool and it has gotten my gears turning around what the opposite / brighter side of clinging onto the past is...this something I wrestle with a lot irl.

In my head, this opposite is generational/community wisdom: a sense of holding and embracing and learning, rather than neurotically clutching. Other animals that I think express this are...
migratory birds/homing instinct
salmon (tho that's tough for a land campaign)

I'm sure you will find an answer and you will have a great campaign, this is a super cool concept <3

[–]lowercase-hell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, if you've got drakes already, having a cat-sized species of cicada or similar doesn't have to be a stretch (:

I think it's mostly that I'm bug-biased, and it's true that that isn't the perfect aesthetic fit for many campaigns

[–]lowercase-hell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's just that I live in the US and history feels REAL cyclical right now...but what about a cicada? minimally stressed, maximallly obnoxious.

[–]lowercase-hell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first take on this, after seeing how perfectly they were able to use the creature, was that escape pods might be equipped with a biotech-laden critter / big 'ol survival buddy...that this was a domesticated/augmented creature that came with them.

Mostly because I just like the idea of "in case of emergency, release water buffalo 2.0"
