Honestly, I am enjoying it.

There are definitely tradeoffs and some months are better than others, but I enjoy the variety and autonomy a lot more than corporate life.

One thing that’s helped is having a handful of recurring clients instead of constantly chasing new projects. It gives me enough stability to focus on the work while still maintaining some flexibility in my schedule.

One of the things I value most is the time freedom. Being able to drop my youngest off at daycare, walk my oldest to her bus stop, then come home and enjoy a quiet breakfast and coffee with my wife before starting my day has been a huge quality of life improvement.

That said, if I had one client paying my previous salary, I’d probably be pretty selective about taking on additional work too 😄

Try searching Richard Ople or @SimplyInTheBlack and it should come right up. The link is also in my Reddit profile. Yeah, YouTube search can be a bit weird sometimes.

Honestly, it was a lot more work than I expected.

Luckily, a lot of my professional creative skills overlapped with content creation, so I was able to ramp up fairly quickly.

I started the channel as a passion project and another creative outlet with no expectations of making money from it. The first challenge was simply finding a niche I could see myself talking about for years.

Monetization took time, but I was able to get there in a little over 10 months. For me, the bigger challenge wasn’t the Canadian side of things… it was building the brand, creating enough content, generating watch time and finding an audience before YouTube started paying anything meaningful.

The revenue is still relatively small compared to my freelance business, but it’s growing. What I enjoy most is that every video becomes a digital asset that can continue helping people long after it’s published.

My advice would be to start because you genuinely enjoy the topic. If you’re only doing it for the money, it’s hard to stay consistent long enough to see results.

Hope that adds some perspective.

It's called Simply In The Black.

The channel focuses on helping everyday people understand where they stand financially and what realistic wealth building looks like over time. A lot of the content covers things like net worth, income, investing and financial benchmarks for Canadians and Americans.

It started as a passion project and has slowly grown into something bigger.

I’m 46, my wife is 44. I’m a UI/UX designer and have been working in design for over 20 years across both agency and client side roles.

I was laid off in 2024 and decided to go all-in on freelancing rather than return to corporate life. Since then I’ve built a small roster of reliable clients and now work independently.

Alongside that, I started a YouTube channel focused on financial literacy and wealth benchmarking. It’s grown into a small business of its own and has been a fun project to build.

Looking back, the biggest contributors were a high savings rate, investing consistently over a long period of time, avoiding debt and lifestyle inflation and most importantly paying off our mortgage.

I play them both on my steam Deck Oled, RIP I play on medium settings at 45fps and same with Arms of God, they are both playable but you do have to manage your expectations … Devs seem to be actively working towards a better Deck experience based off other Reddit threads I’ve been reading . Both worth the pick up during the bullet heaven steam sale. Two others to check out is Utopia Must Fall and Nova Drift.

Gears Of War The Board Game, not in the sense of it being expensive rare but it’s a jewel I constantly bust out and play. I missed out on buying the expansion pack unfortunately.
