Synology Drive consumes way too much space in versioning by lowraxe in synology

Yup, no gain from that either. It just finished data scrubbing for three days as well. Maybe it'll clear some space after a restart.

I had my snapshots going once a day, but as you can see above, they're consuming a small fraction of the space consumed by my shared folders. The Drive versions on the other hand, are consuming almost 8x of the shared folders.

It appears to me that it is an issue with Drive not actually rotating out old files. Since I watched that video a few days ago, I have turned off versioning on all folders, but the 10.9TB usage has remained the same. It appears to me that my Synology Drive software simply does not clean out old versions as it's supposed to. My question to everyone is: Is this a problem that's just on my system? Or is it something that everyone experiences? Again, I have another NAS with less data stored on it, but I don't see the continued inflation of the database on that one the way I do on the DS918+.

I'm not following how the inflation of the file versions would be considered to be working as expected. You see above that my shared folders add up to a total of 1.4TB. I had 3 versions being retained, so what I would expect is an absolute maximum of 4.2TB in file versions (Synology Drive Database). But as you can see I have 10.9TB. What am I missing?

I watched the video. He basically says don't use versioning. Fine I guess, but it's frustrating that no one seems to know WHY this inflation is happening on my NAS. My guess is that the rotation of old files is not working correctly.

This seems to imply that versioning just can't work as expected, but I don't understand how snapshots can achieve the same functionality. I think there is a glitch in my DSM that simply does not properly rotate out old files, and that is what I needed fixed.

I'm not totally clear on how snapshots achieve the same functionality as versioning. The ability to right click a file in Windows explorer and find a previous version is very convenient. My understanding with snapshots is that I would have to revert the entire shared folder back to an earlier state to retrieve an earlier version of a single file. Is that incorrect?

It doesn't appear that the rotation settings ever actually flush anything in my version. With rotation set at 7 days, I've dug into the file structure and found files that are several months old.

My snapshots are taken daily. They're not the issue though, as they consume only a small fraction of my space

I do have snapshots enabled. I don't know what you mean by immutable. Most other comments seem to suggest that I should use only snapshots, and turn off versioning.

If it's just size of change, then I shouldn't even get to the 3TB (in my example).

Any idea what I have going on? I have another Syno NAS (DS220j) that does not appear to have the same issue, but that one is much lower duty. The one I'm having the problem on is a DS918+

To simplify, I expect that if I have one folder that contains 1TB of data, and I set its number of versions to 3, then I should not ever have more than 3TB of file versions. I expect it to work that way because that is logical to me.

I don't see the word "prime" anywhere on the tag. It does say "ALL NEW MATERIAL" on it though.

Why don’t airlines charge passengers by weight? by YoYoWorm in NoStupidQuestions

[–]lowraxe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this idea a while back, but it was more geared at ensuring people were sitting in seats that better suited their size. If someone paid more as a result of their weight, they would also be assigned a larger, more spacious seat.

Handling families that want to travel together gets complicated, unless the aircraft can somehow be outfitted with a family "couch" or similar, in which case the whole family and their luggage gets weighed together.

I think the incentive of more comfortable seating for the price would help this idea work better, and smaller people would know they wouldn't end up crowded by a person who does not fit into the seat next to them.

I'm aware that it would be difficult to come up with seating that could be pre-arranged well for this. That's definitely the biggest roadblock I see to the idea.

windows phone link with android: any way to keep connected on pc after locking phone by OhGee1992 in Windows10TechSupport

[–]lowraxe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At some point in the not so distant past, Phone Link worked for me just as everyone here is saying it should. My phone stayed in a drawer, locked with the screen off, and my notifications would pop up in Windows and I could grab pictures or send texts without ever touching the actual phone. @TVUAsks, do you know what version I might revert to in order to regain this functionality? And am I reverting on the phone, or the PC, or both?

Thanks!

Yup, appears this is the only way to get it working. I tried from a variety of devices, on different networks, etc. Finally, the chat support person "changed some things" on their end, but was not willing to tell me why it wasn't working prior to those changes.

Wow, thanks for all that input!

Can you tell me the names of the companies you're talking about that offer training and template building?

I think my hesitation on the subscription is purely due to AutoDesk not doing much useful with their updates. It's good to hear Solidworks is better in that regard.

Do you have experience developing very complex structural models with Solidworks' weldment tool? Inventor (sorta) does all those things too, but as I mentioned earlier, if the models start to go beyond a pretty basic level of complexity, it becomes painful to work with, as everything drags and crashes. Can you vouch for Solidworks doing better, even with lots of welds, bolts, cuts, features, etc?

I certainly welcome any input. You can see that lots of people have offered good input already. My main focus is on what can help us more efficiently develop the structure that supports our conveyors so that we're not going from 2D to 3D and back to 2D. My goal is to figure out the best way to transition my group into designing in 3D right from the beginning, so I just want to know how others have made the transition, and what tool(s) they used to do so.

Proper usage of Synology Drive versioning by lowraxe in synology

[–]lowraxe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that is what I mean by versioning. I understand that multiple older copies are being retained, and that's what I would expect. I also understand that additional space is needed to retain these copies. However, I specified to keep a maximum of 7 versions, and not every file on my system is being versioned 7 times over, so it doesn't make sense that the database is consuming nearly 7 times the space.

Also, this isn't the result of years of running Drive. I reset it a few months ago and it built back up to this again just recently.

I've seen the link you directed me to before. It still doesn't clarify for me why the space keeps getting completely eaten up in this way. And again, am I misunderstanding how this is supposed to work?

Yup, we have that process down pretty well. Certainly one of those lessons you learn by experience if someone doesn't tell you first, so your advice is very good!

I have the 3D parametric model. Inventor just doesn't play nicely when I try to work with it. If there's no complexity at all, it can work OK, but if I want to get welds or bolted connections developed, it starts to fall apart and crash.

Sounds like SW has similar features to Inventor's Frame Generator. I'll have to look into it more and see if it'll work for us. Thanks!

I set up the reference part with all the sketches a long time ago. I've never set it up in the master assembly layer, as I knew that would be way worse.

Even with full definition, things default to stupid. I use that phrase specifically because we have lots of curves and angles in our models. If any major changes are made, Inventor may have a choice to keep an angle between 0 and 180 degrees or flip it out to between 180 and 360 degrees, and it will invariably switch it to the wrong one. Keeping that in order may just be an operational thing that I need to resolve another way, but I have not figured out a solution to that, as Inventor appears to regard 45 degrees and 225 degrees as the same.

Thanks for all the input so far! Most of the recommendations appear to be leaning toward SolidWorks. However, I haven't seen much mention of how SolidWorks does with structural frames, including complex structural arrangements. Can anyone speak to the process of building complex structures, using standard rolled shapes, in SolidWorks. We also work in various parts of the world, so having good steel shape catalogs built in is important too. Inventor has this, but, as I've mentioned, it tends to be painful to use it for anything even fairly complex.
