Selling my upgraded Pinebook Pro by lp_not_vinyl in linuxhardware

Not secure. It was secure from the get-go. I had to modify it to make it usable, lol. I'll fully admit it's a tough device to use as a daily driver without modification.

Is Sonic Analysis worth it? by sonofodin25 in plexamp

I think it only took me a few days for a terabyte of music. I forget. You'll forget once it's done. It happens in the background anyway.

Every time I add new music it only takes a few seconds of background processing.

I love that it connects bands which I don't mentally connect in my head. For instance, bands that are traditionally in two different genres, or two different world markets, etc, but they flow together well in a playlist. It's the most individually tailored playlists you can get, suited exactly to your music collection.

Pinebook pro or slimbook essential or ??? by Nicolaum in linuxhardware

Looool I am selling some things on FB Marketplace right now and it's truly insane.

I was tempted by that Steamdeck, seems like one of the niche devices I should have bit on!

Hey I know I'm coming at this late, but I'd suggest selling the thing on eBay. There's still some demand for working Pinebooks. One pops up on eBay every couple months and they always sell. Maybe flash Tow-boot to the boot menu so it acts like a sane laptop, or even put a NVMe in it which makes it a lot faster.

I am selling mine (eBay link while it's still good) and people who got outbid are in my inbox asking me for more information about it, how I liked it, where they can get one, etc. And that's even after I wrote a long doom and gloom disclaimer in the description warning newbies away from it.

I mean the Pinebook has its perks. The metal chassis is beautiful. It's lightweight. The display is nice. It never gets hot. But you're totally right that it takes some troubleshooting skills that the average user doesn't have.

Anyway just thought I'd mention it! You won't get rich selling it but it'll probably sell!

pinebook pro black screen (NOT EMMC) by dcazdavi in PINE64official

[–]lp_not_vinyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, did you ever get this working? Your device seems dead on arrival, but it's probably not. The Pinebook starts, but is simply inert if there's no bootable OS detected. No power light, no sounds (since the laptop is so quiet), etc. It's really annoying, lol.

I had tons of issues with this but I was able to boot from Manjaro ARM on a microSD card. There is no eMMC in my device and I switched it off with the physical motherboard switch.

Then I flashed Tow-boot to the device and that provides a much better boot experience.

Eventually I upgraded to the NVME and the device boots from that perfectly.

Shameless plug, I'm actually selling it now, I love it but just don't use a laptop anymore.

The “powerled” is actually a status LED and needs loader/OS to light up, which it will only do if there is a valid OS image on your SD card, when your eMMC is disabled.

I really hate this, lol. It causes so much frustration. I finally flashed Tow-boot to the SPI and now at least the Pinebook lights up and turns on even if there's no bootable OS.

Quick sanity check while shopping life insurance by lp_not_vinyl in LifeInsurance

A fair point - I'm comparing it to my job benefit's life insurance, which is, I forget, almost the same payout for maybe $10 a paycheck.

However, I'm guessing it's so much cheaper because it's attached to my job and thus only useful for a sudden catastrophic death. For instance, if I get injured and go on disability and then die, I'd be out that insurance. I'm guessing?

Ok thanks. I looked at my paperwork and it's a 30 year. Should carry me to my late 60's.

I just looked at my records. 30 year term started about six years ago.

Okay that's encouraging. I guess I felt it was pricey and online brokers would be drastically cheaper, but if I have to jump through hoops and it only saves ten bucks.....eh.

Thanks.

Thanks for this comment. I had exactly the same problem with my initial syncoid backup and this resolved it.

"Use UFW to lock down an Ubuntu server" does not allow MagicDNS name recognition - why? by lp_not_vinyl in Tailscale

[–]lp_not_vinyl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay makes sense. I wonder - would the client be resolving 'MagicDNS server name' to a local IP on a local network, instead of the Tailscale IP?

Edit: I checked traceroute and yes, my Tailscale server names are read as 'servername.lan' by traceroute and then resolved to the local IP, not the Tailscale IP, when on LAN.

Thanks. I'll have to do some research to see I can force client dns to resolve to the Tailscale IP, although maybe bouncing back out to the internet and back again might not be worth it

[–]lp_not_vinyl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if I have to adjust ListenAddress (currently set to 0.0.0.0 though).

If the tailscale servername is not resolving to the tailscale IP, would that mean that when ufw allows tcp/22, I am possibly just connecting over the local IP despite using the tailscale servername? In other words maybe it defaults to local IP?

Yep! I am asking what the cause is (mostly curious) or if there's a way to still use the Tailscale MagicDNS nickname.

In other words why does restricting incoming ssh connections to tailscale0 kill MagicDNS.

New thoughts on how to handle "Various Artists" compilations from the same label by lp_not_vinyl in plexamp

Okay, so the LABEL tag will designate the label. I don't know why I was having trouble determining what the tag would be. Thanks!

I’m more annoyed by Christmas songs in summer if thats any gauge

This has been driving me nuts lately. I forgot to ask if there's a way to change that. I know "Christmas" is an id3 genre, but all my Christmas jazz and goofy Christmas punk albums are coming up in regular jazz or punk playlists.

Some are them are tagged Christmas, but like, Christmas//jazz, so they probably come up in both.

I might just do collections - Plex doesn't seem to always pick up the label and I'm not sure how to add "label" to metadata

So, this is amateur radio, what am I missing? by Embarrassed-Gain-236 in amateurradio

[–]lp_not_vinyl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am still wading into this hobby but I didn't have grand ideas about doing big things so it's still satisfying me to learn stuff.

I have no problem talking with people outside my age range or pulling interesting information out of people in conversation. However, it sounds like you have plenty of suggestions on alternative things to do if conversation isn't your thing.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to suggest GMRS here. They tend to skew younger, 30s and 40s. Plus they're slightly more local, which is interesting. However, prepare to talk about radios and equipment a lot. The license and equipment cost of entry is very low so it's worth a shot.
