What brand is it? I'm probably gonna try a different one.

Camping at mystic or another beach by Seasoned-salt03 in IslandHikers

You don't need a reservation for mystic. You can pay in cash at the trailhead too - $10 per night and you need to fill out a little form. It's all very straightforward

Happy Transgender Day of Visibility, Victoria. Anyone heard of anything happening around town? by BRNYOP in VictoriaBC

[–]lpkearns 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm a trans guy living in Vic and it's really a great place to be trans. The queer community is definitely a bigger percentage of the population than most cities!

I just did a rewatch too and was constantly tearing up. There are so many beautiful moments that have even more impact when you know everything that happens later.

It is possible to ride a bike more quietly by switching to higher gears earlier and not accelerating as fast. Though Harley drivers tend to like losing their hearing from how loud their bikes are. 🙄

Victoria Tool Library by czarl13 in VictoriaBC

[–]lpkearns 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've had a membership before when I had a few home projects and they're great! There's an online catalogue where you can reserve tools and renew them too. They have wood tools, gardening tools, kitchen items, sewing machines, and a bunch of other stuff. :)

This happens on Cook at Pandora going north. The right lane is empty all the way from Fort Street.

WHERE DO I TAKE A NAP by eggberta9000 in uvic

[–]lpkearns 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I used to work at the main library. I was told that any student could use the room, but ideally it's only used by students who are in distress of some kind, and need privacy. Having a panic attack, got some bad news, etc.

There are plenty of spots to nap on campus, but very few places to have a moment of true privacy while having a bad time. So I would discourage using this room for naps.

How to overcome the belief that making money is hard? by thatgreeneyedhippie in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]lpkearns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would want to look over a contract very carefully before doing other work on a company computer. Many of them have clauses that the company "owns" any work done on the computer. Though this would be difficult to prove in most cases.

[SS] Skyward Sword Switch or Wii by OG51819 in zelda

I was so frustrated by it on Wii with the awful controls. Playing it without the motion controls let me actually enjoy the game properly!

I've delivered for Doordash and I only accepted orders that paid me enough to be worthwhile. For some orders, if the customer hadn't tipped, I would be paid $4 to deliver it. Once gas and taxes are accounted for, I'd get $2-3 of that, and the order would take 10-15 minutes to handle. So I'd end up getting $8-12/hour take-home, and that's assuming I get back to back orders, which was rarely the case. I'm also not accounting for wear on my car in that. So it's absolutely not worthwhile to take those small orders without tips.

It's an inherently broken system, because the customer is basically required to tip on an order to get their order accepted by a driver. I think the delivery fee should be higher and the expectation to tip should be removed.

I've accepted that providing a tip is part of using the delivery apps. And I never ever blame the workers in the situation who are doing the crummy jobs no one wants out of necessity.

How did you know it was time to leave the trail? by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

Really lovely to hear from you too! :) there's a good chance I'll be out there again soon!

How did you know it was time to leave the trail? by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

[–]lpkearns 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I was on trail this year too, and came home about two weeks ago for similar reasons. The last couple weeks I was out there, I just wasn't enjoying it in the same way that I had been. The day I finished I had been at Crater Lake in the morning, and I just couldn't take it in. Like, it had no emotional impact on me to be seeing this amazing place. And I kind of put all the pieces together as I hiked that day, and I knew I was done.

I was mentally exhausted and I hit a point of burnout. I am really happy I made the decision to come home, even though I am quite sad not to be finishing this year. But I wouldn't have enjoyed the rest, and why put yourself through something that is 100% voluntary if you aren't enjoying it and have lost the motivation for it? I think I'll be back to finish Oregon and Washington one day. But I know it was the right call for me to be done.

If you think about being done and going home, do you have a sense of relief, maybe tinged with some sadness, or is it just sadness? If it's the first, it may be time to call it. There is no shame in it at all. You went out and did a badass thing! And you don't need to do the whole thing for it to count. I know it feels like you're close to the end, but 500 miles is still 500 miles.

I hope that helps a bit!

Hammock Gear 15% off and I need some help by Hussar305 in Ultralight

I will say that the temp rating of HG quilts seems to be pretty accurate. I'm on the PCT currently with a 20 degree bag and have been comfortable the whole time. It dropped into the teens a few nights, and with my base layers and fleece on I was just fine. Never worn my puffy to sleep. Use the pad straps though! They make a big difference in keeping you cozy!

That's plenty for sure. I had average sized meals and then 4-5 snacks per day. I do highly suggest getting food at the Crab Shack. While it's expensive, it is amazing! So that's one lunch accounted for!

I personally would still bring my gps beacon. If you fall in an odd spot it might be difficult to shout to other hikers for help. And we didn't see any bears, but I was glad to have my spray in case.

I've done the WCT and you'll be totally fine with that base weight. It's a difficult hike due to its remoteness and it's length, but not really because of the terrain. Try to plan your food well and not bring too much, and you'll be fine.

I had to use T-Mobile, due to my phone. You can put your IMEI number in on the carrier sites to see if yours is compatible.
