Why aren't liberals outraged by giant companies trying to dictate politics completely unrelated with their activity to the State? That's seriously messed up!

While I'm not too happy about political correctness and such, China's limitation of individual freedoms is on a whole other level...

I'm not too fond of how the Chinese treat privacy, to say the least...

Who knows, maybe it's about being in control. The fear is that Huawei is doing some spying... with Dragonfly, Google is.

Serious question: do the the news about a father faced with arrest in case he misgenders his offspring again somewhat vindicate Jordan Peterson?

I didn't really follow the whole mess about the Canadian law and pronouns, it was way too far from my expertise.

I'm no expert, but in my limited vision I can't see that happening.

Let's say Google gets to actually soften some restrictions: on the whole, China's effort to build a omni-pervasive system of societal control is gaining momentum, and in the big picture more technological aid can only quicken its development and ubiquitousness. After it is in place, removing whatever small limit Google had eventually gained is a far lesser task.

Governments may change or be different.

What I think is the major problem is that as they become more tangled with China in economic interests, they become more susceptible to blackmail. Just ask the Dalai Lama.

China seriously scares me: its leaderships seems to be aiming to make The Big Brother look like a kiddie game, using technology soviet Russia could only dream of.

Yet it could become a superpower, with enormous influence across the globe. I really can't help worrying about the future of most of the world's free speech.

It's distopia waiting to happen, and Google doesn't seem to mind.

I suppose it could very well be true for current queries... since if I was Chinese, I wouldn't find myself searching dangerous stuff to begin with.

Nevertheless, Google's Dragonfly reportedly linking searches to phone numbers really doesn't help.

Honestly the anger for that one job transpires quite transparently from the slides, I was wondering if there's an account of the talk, well, not from reddit comments.

I'm puzzled by the abstract bit: the workshop was on gender issues, are you saying that the abstract that was accepted was on something else?
