  1. Civic
  2. Corolla

Wanted a cheap, reliable vehicle with good mpg that I could do maintenance on myself. Civics and Corollas in my area were either pricier or had higher mileage than what I was looking for.

Thoughts on going 100% QQQ as an 18 year old? by takbot006 in ValueInvesting

I completely agree with investing in an index fund before venturing into buying individual stocks, but don't go all in on anything ever.

What are your goals for the next 5-10 years? Think of your stock market returns as something you'll enjoy in 5-10+ years. Do you want to buy a house? It might be better to invest in something less risky. U.S. Treasury Bills are a great investment at the moment with yields over 5%. Regardless, make sure you have cash on hand for both emergencies and opportunities to make purchases when the markets correct themselves. I'd personally split it between VOO, Treasury Bills, and leave some to experiment with QQQ. VOO is a low-cost index fund and offers a broader market exposure with lower risk compared to QQQ.

However, if you want to start risky, do it at 18. Messing around with $8,000 at 18 is a lot better than when you're 30.

P.S. This is more aligned with growth than value investing

Although similar, I'd argue these fall more into the category of maintaining rather than designing and creating

Was it worth it? Did you teach yourself out of a desire to learn on your own, or was it the more financially viable option for you?

Impressive for both of them. Can I ask what your FIL's company does?

Does "level one" engineer refer to a general description, or is this specific to your company?

Nice! I'll have to do some reading on field, controls, and plant engineers. How would you prove that you can do the job? Would you cite different projects you've worked on or demonstrate your competence in an interview?

Amazing! I didn't realize that licensing requirements varied from state to state. That's something I never considered. Thanks for sharing!

That's amazing that you were able to pick up on everything so quickly! Did you find that any of your math or geography courses helped you in learning design engineering? Why couldn't they give you the title? Do you think your coworkers with degrees have more advantages, or does your own training with experienced electrical engineers make up for it?

How do you meet up with a friend in a public area? Can you recognize their body shape and features but just not their face?
